Let's do Badminton in Bangalore?

Okay, this is crazy. You see me in all sports related posts, be it Basketball or Soccer. Though I used to play those, one thing I started at a very young age, and still trying to learn is Badminton.

While I was in other cities, I had no problem in finding places and people to play Badminton. There are many staduims/ courts which accepts guests at descent rates. I also used to get enough folks for company.

Ever since I landed in Bangalore, I do not see either (IT?). Thats how I got the crazy idea of starting this thread.

I am looking for

1) Folks you are passionate about Badminton- I am not a pro, just one who loves the game. I don't really care how good/bad you are as long as you are willing to spend your time.

2) Places where we could play- CitiNest in Indiranagar is one place I know. I also know few private places, but getting entry there for a group is difficult. Suggestions are welcome.

And I thought I am crazy talking this in an auto forum. Buddy, good to know the following- Among all racquet sports, Badminton shuttle travels the fastest. It is quite common to see smashes crossing 220Km/Hr (not mine). Fastest I have seen is Chen Hong's smash at 292 Km/hr agaist Peter Gade. That was in 2006 World Championship Quarterfinal.

So, do wear a helmet, you might get burnt.

There are a lot of places for Badminton in Bangalore. Remember Prakash Padukone is from here !!! :-) The Karnataka Badminton association has a huge no. of courts. This is in Millers Road/Queen's Road intersection I think. There are a few courts in YMCA near Vidhan Soudha.

Citinest is a particular favourite for its wooden courts. This is in Indira Nagar.

I'm sure there are more in Jayanagar side as well.

The Prakash Padukone academy started at 8th Main, Malleshwaram. If memory serves me right, this (court) belongs to the Canara Union.

The Prakash Padukone Badminton academy is now at Vasanth Nagar 080 2228 3747 (from Google, please check for accuracy).

Finding a good court to play Badminton is real difficult in Bangalore, even if you find one it'll be crowded and if not crowded then it'll be booked for some corporates. Damn, I got frustrated finding one good place to play badminton. I used to go to NGV builder's club, Koramangla to play(they have 4 wooden courts) before but the place has become too crowded and then left it. I loved this game but not a good player of it though.

Thats a little sobered version. I think I remember Hugh Grant say in 'Love, Actually', "When in Rome, do as many Romans as you can"... not one. Lesson to be learnt nitrous, in case you're packing your bags for Italy! cheers:

...for Bangaloreans

Here's something which came up in Times of India Bangalore edition 2 years back....on Sept 2006. I have the paper cutting.

Shiva Kumar, a badminton coach has built S Kumar Academy for Badminton on 3 acres of land at Bidrahalli near KR Puram, Bangalore. He's been a badminton coach for over 15 years. He used to coach at Citi Nest (of M D Surendra). At the time of this news item, he was looking for sponsors. As per the news, the contact numbers are 98440-86765 / 98440-56765 / 080-25213579.

Good luck!
