I have a query regarding my mothers calfs and knee joints. She is 65, she has pain in both calf muscles. Doctor said, most muscles doesn't have strength! Many times she can't walk... She stopped taking steps. What can be done in her case? Any physiotherapy help? Is there any treatment we can start to ease her condition? Thank for any input.

I am having a doubt whether frequent scaling/cleaning of teeth will lead to a loss of the teeth enamel. Will this frequent scaling have some after effects?
What should be the frequency of scaling in case of a non smoker?

@BoneCollector, I have a question here.

I used to go for jogging and used to do skipping earlier. Somone told me that these activities create a lot of strain on your knee/hip joins.

So these activities should be reduced as one's age progresses. Even if one wants to carry on he/she should be doing this on grass and not on a hard cemented/marble floor.
How true is this?

No.

It's not about smoker or non smoker. It's about your levels of oral hygiene and gum condition.

If you are in perfect health, the interval of scaling should be 6 months. It's upto your dentist to chart out your scaling intervals depending on your ability to maintain oral hygiene.

I have always wondered: do crowns require scaling in the same way as natural teeth do? I have so many, I really ought to know, but still I am confused about this!

Yes. But it needs to be done in a correct way or you will land up scratching the crowns (especially the ceramics).

Special attention needs to be given at the margins.

@Bone Collector- I strained my left hamstring when stretching back in mid-2009. Didn't get any treatment because I thought it'd heal by itself. After a couple of months when it was still troubling me, showed it to a local GP: he said I would have to learn to live with it unless I wanted to take cortisone injections. Since I didn't, let it pass. Assured me it wasn't a slipped disc.

It's been over 2 years now but at times I can still feel the pain returning. Especially when I have exerted myself a fair bit or in cold weather. Do I need an orthopedic check-up? Is there anyone you can recommend in Pune or western suburbs of Mumbai?

Hi, can you provide me with few details like if she has Osteoarthritis of the knees or has the doctor said anything related to the joint? The doc says most muscles dont have strength, can you elaborate. There are so many things around knees including the joint itself that can lead to difficulty in walking. Do you have the x-rays of the knees? If so,can you send it across to me? Also tell me if she has any other illness.
Regards

Hi there,
There are few possiblities which can cause pain in hamstrings. One of the main causes is a Disc prolapse which can cause nerve root irritation and thigh and calf pain.Do you have any sensations of tingling/numbness in your affected or the other thigh/leg? Another cause is hamstring tightness itself that can cause pain. Also,it might have been possible that you would have torn a few fibers of your hamstrings at that time which healed with fibrosis. Therefore causing pain now.I'll suggest, you better consult an orthopaedician regarding this.I must tell you,it was really good that you refrained from steroid injection.Treatment depends and is to be done for the cause and not the symptom only.
Pune has a famous orthopaedic hospital,Sancheti Hospital in Shivajinagar. You can consult there.I have no idea about Mumbai.
Regards

ACL Avulsion Fracture - Need Help

Guys,

I had an accident on 20th Jan 2011, while I was riding on my Bullet to Rider Mania. Accident happened in a small town of Orisa. I was rushed to the nearest govt. hospital in Devgarh. Doctor there took the x-ray, gave me pain killer injection and said that it will be ok in few days. However the injury was so severe that I could not even touch the ground.

I took a taxi and went Kolkata for RM, and there through some local friends I showed it to orthopedic surgeon. Unfortunately he also referred to the same x-ray which was not indicating any signs of fracture. So gave me some pain killers that’s it. Seven days passed by, pain was increasing day by day, I flew back to pune and showed it to doctor in Sancheti hospital. He took a fresh x-ray, which indicated ACL avulsion fracture in my right knee. He immediately gave a cast for four weeks.

On 24th Feb cast was removed, and I was suffering from severe lack / lag in flexion and extension. Doctor recommended that I should the physio regularly. So I did. Visited sancheti everyday for physio for 2 months, and eventually flexion was sorted out, now I can bent the knee completely.

However I kept complaining about severe pain while the exercises for extension and thereafter throughout the day while walking. This went on for some more time, and I ended up showing it to one Orthopedic surgeon, who asked me to wait till 8 more weeks and concentrate on physio, so I did. However, I realized that the day I do physio pain aggravates. Visited the doctor again after 8 weeks, pain in capsules while walking and while doing exercises was a main concern. Even after 5 months, I still limp while walking.

He recommended that I should get MRI done and also referred me to a Knee Joint expert at Sancheti. I did the MRI. To my surprise the fracture is not healed, not only that, the small crack indicated in x-ray was the tip of iceberg. I have large ACL avulsion fracture which can be seen clearly in MRI. Plus some stage 1 injury of meniscus as well as ligament.

Knee joint expert has again given me some pain killers, a plain knee pad and physio for four weeks. However I am not confident about this treatment. And also tired of visiting another doctor for opinion. Usually in such a case, I would have been running a marathon by now, whereas I can barely walk a kilometer in a day, and that is with lot of pain.

Any doctors on this forum? please advice.

re: Calling doctors/dentists/specialists on Team-BHP to provide free consultations

Hi,
I had a pain in my left wrist since 2 years. Showed to a Ortho Doc. After X-ray and other tests, it was diagnosed as Dorsal Ganglioma(OMG, it sounds scary). AFAI'U'(understood!), it is growth of a small piece of muscle between the ligaments of wrist.
I was suggested not to go for surgery since it may lead to regrowth. However, when I use my left hand(wrist) to lift pretty heavy objects or do any work that involves usage of wrists(except typing keyboard/mobile), it hurts.

Requesting Docs to suggest/advice so that I can get back to doing normal activities without pain.
