The commonest bl group in the world is B +ve.
Group O (- ve to be more precise) is the universal donor.
AB +ve is the universal recipient.
Although very rarely is blood of any other group given.

Hey, I always thought -ve was rare! And that you can't mix -ve and +ve blood, so how can O-ve be the universal donor? Doc, care to shed some light on this?

BTW, I'm A+ve.

I was always under the impression that O+ve is the most common..

some googling....

"Because O positive is the most common Blood type (39% of the population)"
http://www.bloodbook.com/type-facts.html

"Overall, the O blood type is the most common blood type in the world, although in some areas, such as Norway, the A group dominates. The A antigen is overall more common than the B antigen. Since the AB blood type requires the presence of both A and B antigens, the AB blood type is the rarest of the ABO blood types."
http://www.answers.com/topic/blood-type

Btw the same page also says that B is most common in central Asia but not much anywhere else..

-ve is rare however these can donate both to +ve and -ve whereas a -ve will accept only -ve. This way O-ve becomes the universal donor to both +ve and -ve.

Mine, the first here, B negative.
