Re: The Weight Loss Thread.

Want to lose 45 kgs the easy way out? There's almost always a downside. In this case a Heart Attack!

Australian woman loses almost 45 kgs by being on a diet which consists of only Red Bull.

And then the (inevitable*??) happened!

Link. http://austriantimes.at/index.php?id=13781

I think she was plain stupid to be on a diet of only energy drinks. If you ask me, she was asking for this!

You should be, that is a very rare achievement. 99% achieve weight loss and look tired and sickly at the end of it. Brilliant!

And long way to go is the way to look at it, maintenance mode being boring is very hard to do, and result is backsliding.

Don't forget to enjoy the journey though.

Re: The Weight Loss Thread.

Let me start by bowing down to all of you who've found courage and determination to lose weight regardless of pressures of life.

I have done it once when I was 19. I used to weigh 104kgs (at 5'10") when I was 18, then I started walking and then graduated to running (from 4 to 10 kms a day). I used to go swimming thrice a week. Result of all this was that I trimmed down to 72kgs by the time I was 19. I used to eat heavy breakfast in morning, sprouts for lunch, khakhra in the evening and dal-rice-curd dinner by 8 sharp. During the weekend I used to drink as much and eat whatever I wanted to. Now I guess this was the age when such thing can happen quickly.

Now, at 31, I have a desk-job (minimum 10 hours) and I've gone up to 99. I want to get down to 72 again. But I just can't gather enough courage for it. Earlier when I lost my weight, I was in Ahmedabad with my family. In Bangalore, well I'm left at mercy of junk/office food during the day and some maid-cooked food for dinner. How can I start to lose the weight? I was thinking of junking my Motorbike for a cycle to do 7 kms of home-work-home journey. And then maybe join a nearby gym for the weekends.

Also, I like having chapatis for dinner. Is it a bad option? I always have my tea with half a tea-spoon sugar. My sugar level is under control (just got it checked). I do have a sweet-tooth for sweets and well tangy-tongue for chaats. What would be a good food routine.

A friend of mine has lost about 27 kgs (in 5 months) by doing insanity workout, should I give it a try and then ease down to regular exercise? Or hit the gym and work-out with a trainer and dietitian!

Also, people from Bangalore, if you can suggest a good gym in Frazer Town or Indiranagar area, that'll be awesome.

It isn't that difficult - I have lost 25-35 kilos thrice in my life! The second time was when I was living in Bangalore, in 2006. I found the Talwalkar gym at Ulsoor to be quite good then.

A three-four day in a week works better than weekend gym. Alternate that with a 60 minute walk for three days, leaving a day for rest. In the gym, get a trainer to help you work with weights, tell him you want to build strength - forget the cardio machines, I can't think of anything more boring than them.

Be sensible on the food. For a couple of months, eliminate the sugar - use Sugar free if you must. And fruits to make up for no cooked sweets. Eliminate refined flour products - chapatis are fine if made of atta. Eliminate alcohol. Eliminate junk food, eat fruits and peanuts. Don't eat because you are bored, or while in front of the TV. Drink lots of water. Don't eliminate ghee! Be sure to get the sleep your body needs at night, 7-9 hours, varies from person to person.

Do this for a week, and you will see instant results because you are so overweight to start with. Seeing them will motivate you to stay with the regime for the couple of months, which will see you down by 8-10 kilos. Which in turn will motivate you to move from walking to jogging, starting the walk/jog way. And being that much lighter, will be easier on the knees.

Each time I shed 25 kilos, it took me just 7-8 months. Obviously, it has been very hard to keep the weight from coming back - that is the hard part. This time I have been more successful, I have stayed at the lower weight for almost a year now. By regular exercise, eating well but sensibly, and enjoying life.

Re: The Weight Loss Thread.

I know this is a dumb question:

Most of the guys saw "eliminate sugar". Does sugar contribute in increasing weight?
Yes, i do understand that excess sugar is not good for health may be because (i think) it leads to diabetes?
I am trying to reduce my belly and chin.
I go for a morning walk combined with basic stretches, push-ups - approx 45-60 minutes in all. - Would this suffice?
I am dumb as far this area is concerned. Please clarify.

Its simply about the calories you consume. Also, its hard to keep a tab on that since you consume it along with various beverages etc.

True, but it is a little more complex than that.
Sugar is also calorie dense, so a teaspoon contains a lot more calories than a teaspoon of most other foods, so it is easy to consume more calories via sugar. And it promotes an insulin response from the body to assimilate it, that promotes fat formation.
Any physical exercise you do helps, but not as much as eating food in the right way, when it comes to weight loss. The exercise is beneficial, but more for fitness and boosting energy levels.

I have reduced from a peak of 113 Kgs 2 year ago to 75 kgs now. Have been maintaining 75 Kgs for past 6 months.

For my height of 186 cms, this means a BMI of 21.7 which I feel is just right.

Have never felt fitter or stronger than this any time earlier .
Hi w 12,
Just how did you do this? I weigh 99kg and at a height of 183 cms, this is overweight. I have been trying various exercises and food controls, but I don't seem to stick to it. I know its all about the mind. But seeing your post gives me an inspiration. Let me know your journey.

Sugar in tea/coffee/milk is a very small part of sugar one consumes.

All these things are chock full of sugar
- Coke/Pepsi/Fanta/Mangola - switch to Diet Coke/Diet Pepsi etc if you have to have it
- Fruit Juices - for some reason people don't seem to think that Fruit Juices are chock full of sugar - I am not talking about added sugar, but the sugar which is part of the fruit. Naturally squeezed fruit juice with nothing added is also chock full of sugar. Eating an actual fruit is far better than drinking juice because the fibre in the fruit cancels out a small part of the sugar (carb = total carb - fibre). But excess fruits also is a lot of sugar.

- For all practical purposes consider maida also to be almost equivalent to sugar in many ways - and in some ways worse - other than the fact that it's a simple carbohydrate just like sugar another thing is that the chemical used to bleach maida is known to cause death of pancreatic cells in rats. Maida is there in practically everything - white bread, biscuits, naan, cakes. Even the so called sugar free sweets are not good if made of maida. When you see wheat in a package ingredients label - it means maida not atta. If the stuff is made of atta, then its always labelled as whole wheat and not just wheat.

Re: The Weight Loss Thread.

I would invite people's attention to my earlier post here - #752.
Being at the right weight is so much more to do with your relationship with food than anything else. Exercise is for fun, fitness and boosting energy levels.
Food is created by God/Nature - take your pick based on personal beliefs - to be savoured and enjoyed, whenever hungry. It is not something to stuff your face with while reading or watching TV, or when you are bored, or miserable for things that aren't working in your life. If you treat food the way it is meant to be treated, and listen to your body, the human body is a wonderful mechanism that can self regulate itself for weight, as it does for other things like temperature.
We have lost touch with our bodies and crash weight loss programs are just as abusive of it.

Thank you .

I made a note of this. I am going to start eating a bit cautiously going forward. I was extremely ignorant of such things. Thanks a ton

Re: The Weight Loss Thread.

Here's something I need fellow member's inputs on:

I'm almost 100 kgs give or take 1 kg. My height is 6.0 ft. I'm broad shouldered courtesy to my father who is also visibly broad shouldered but his height is 5.6 Ft. He weighs 87 kgs. He is 61yrs and I'm 30 Yrs.

Now the problem is that both of us aren't visibly fat. In fact people are shocked when I tell them than I weigh a ton! I have in the past reduced my weight till 80 kgs. It was with cardio exercise and push-ups. However, I remember everyone being shocked and unhappy with this effort because I looked haggered and skinny and pale. Though I was perfectly fine healthwise.

After marriage the inevitable happened. I piled on the lost weight and and am back to from where I started. The weight gain happened over a period of 3 yrs. My question to others is this: Why does my weight so much when I'm not visibly fat. I don't have a paunch or unusual lower body but do have thighs slightly above normal. I fit in a 36-35 regular fit jeans easily and wear a large sized shirt. I have love handles but that too aren't overtly visible in my daily cloths. The love handles are a courtesy to my father too.

I am surprised that people look visibly fat even when their weight is above 85 kgs with belly clearly visible. Further they have to go below 80 kgs to achieve the results.

For me going below 80 is unthinkable. Since I have been 18 I have never gone below 80kgs. I mean for me even 90 will be enough.

When I discuss this with others they invariably say that I have heavy bones like my father. But when I check it up online there isn't any thing conclusive about it.

Can someone help me understand why do I have such high weight without it being visible at 1st look. I've 6.0 ft and 6.1 ft friends barely managing 90kgs but aren't broad shouldered like me.

Does a concept like 'heavy bones' exist? I recon that I can go till 90 kgs without it not showing. If I go to 85 kgs my face will lose its vigour and my limbs and all will look improper. This everyone told me when I was on a weight loss program earlier.

Recently at the gym an instructor told me that you body needs shaping rather than loosing weight because slimming won't help your body structure and you'll look sickly. He said I should do weight only to trim and shape my upper body and legs. However, I am shit scared of weight lifting coz the effect it has after one leaves it. I am already broad and I don't want to look even more 'top heavy' after bout of weight lifting.

I need some serious help from other members as to when can me an ideal thing for me coz I'm again going to start putting my 'body house' in order!

Sounds familiar to me. At 6ft and 105kilos, I looked well built, not obese, as I actually was. A lot also depends on how you carry the weight, and the clothes you wear.

No such thing as heavy bones, but small, medium and large frames are based on the size of the bones, as indicated by wrist or ankle circumference. Based on your wrist size, look up on Google and you should know where you stand.

What does your blood work say? Specifically the cholesterol ratios and triglyceride levels. At 105 kilos, my numbers were bad. And are you able to climb a few flights of stairs and not start panting?

If you are ok on these counts, maybe all you need to lose is about 10 kilos.
