Re: A Guide : Eating Out In Mysore!

^They have the location spot on, district court , park, plenty of offices around etc and there is enough parking.

The place will be overflowing with people in the evening and for Mysuru standards it's quite expensive but worth a visit for the coffee, Maddur Vada, even the sandwiches are good.

Another place worth mentioning is Mahesh Prasad. The Rave idli was outstanding. Didn't have space to try out their other yummies, but will be back.

Re: A Guide : Eating Out In Mysore!

Hotel RRR near palace : location

Had a disappointing experience yesterday. Had been to Mysore for some RTO work. Due to not so punctual behavior of staff at multiple counters at RTO office ( felt like snake and ladder game while being sent from one counter to another for each next step), missed my lunch. Had a rather late snack at 4:30 pm and decided to have good dinner. Unfortunately, due to evening calls, could wrapup my day only after 9:30pm. When I looked up the hotels who are still open, Saw RRR is open till 11pm. So went there by 10pm. All I wanted a nice meal or hot biryani. Asked them if they have Biryani. Server said, yes. He said both chicken and mutton are available. I was delighted and ordered a mutton biryani with coke.

It took a while and I was sipping coke in anticipation of devouring hot steaming biryani. Associated the delay towards time needed to prepare hot and fresh biryani. How wrong I was. After some 15-20 mins, server came with not so hot looking biryani. Forget hot, it was not even warm. I asked him, why it is not hot. He says that ' Biryani got over in our hotel, so got it from their other branch which is nearby. so it is not hot'. I was not at all happy. still tried to finish it off as I was super hungry. after two three spoons, couldn't eat and told I am paying the bill but could not eat it. Server was least botherd, but offered to heat it. He got it heated and served again. I had to swallow my pride and eat it as post 10pm, most hotels will be closed and I didnt had mood to search another place to eat.

Tourist crowd has spoilt the food culture as the establishments are least bothered to serve good food these days. This doesnt mean, I will not visit again there. But will be wise enough to visit during peak times where the food will be cooked fresh.

Just thought of shairng my experience.

Re: A Guide : Eating Out In Mysore!

We are huge fans of The Old House. More than their food, I loved their ice cream. Their coffee + dark chocolate scoop combo was absolutely delicious. I wish Bangalore ice cream centers were that good. Places like Corner House are so much loaded on sugar; The Old House gelato was a pleasant change.

Hari Govinda`s inside the Payana Museum is a good alternative, it will be a memorable experience. Nice parking too, space for kids to run around.

If you`d like to try a Mysore staple - Mahesh Prasad, can be busy.
Another old Mysore staple - Gayatri Tiffin room, can be busy.
Hotel Siddhartha (default choice for many) - can be busy.
Green Heritage - a bit busy.
Indian Curry house - very busy!

Thanks for those recommendations!

You didn’t answer my question if Sattvik is good

I have visited Payana, but not Hari Govinda’s. No kids travelling along too, so maybe another time.

I’ve also been to Mahesh Prasad, GTR and Siddhartha (a childhood favourite actually!).

Haven’t been to Green Heritage and Indian Curry House though.

For lunch if I had to choose between Sattvik, Green Heritage and Indian curry house, what would you recommend?

This is exactly why I trust BHPian reviews, honest, unbiased and first hand, can’t ask for more!
Thanks, You were spot on - lunch at The Indian Curry House was excellent
We even managed to escape the crowd though we reached around 1pm, probably lesser crowd being a weekday.

We had a wonderful weekday drive, could get out of the city quickly and after Kengeri it was a breeze on the expressway.

We got to Mysore ring road junction around 10:45, so headed to SAPA Bakery in Gokulam. They had just a few items ready, so tried some coffee - Americano was nice and a Cappuccino which was good too. Also tried a Cinnamon Sugar doughnut and a Pista Litchi Mousse Cake, both delicious and not the over sweetened versions we get usually at other places.

Thanks to our Friendly Mod Chetan_Rao for recommending SAPA

Re: A Guide : Eating Out In Mysore!

Glad you liked it. They have a bit more let's say interesting veg menu , outside of the usual that we get everywhere else, in Mysore you don't have that many restaurants with a more involved veg menu than this.

Mysore has quite a few cafes and pubs now, you can reach them easily and no parking issues like Bangalore. Even if it's the same brand you see in Bangalore, the ambience will be much better because of lot of old mansions converted to cafes and restaurants nowadays.

Malgudi is an old style cafe in Green hotel, there is Frosting, Glens, White teak, big cup, Sky Deck etc . One place I like is Elephant Bar, F&B is not that great but the view makes up for it.

Re: A Guide : Eating Out In Mysore!

Guru Sweets

The outlet located in the K R Market/Sayyaji Rao road is known to be run by the family of the original inventors of Mysuru Pak, the delectable sweet that carries the city's name. Recently, we purchased three items from there:

1. Mysuru Pak: We bought the one made using ghee that has a soft consistency. In being too sweet and excessively grainy, it was a disappointment in terms of taste and form. The palate refused to accept it as Mysuru Pak. Rating: 2/5

2. Sohan Papdi: Another sweet that was an imposter to the name. The soft, loose strands that are characteristic of this wonderful eatable was completely absent and it felt as if I am eating a piece of sugary dough! Rating:0/5

3. Mixture: This was good, but not exceptional. Fair to say that it didn't taste like anything that it wasn't. Rating: 3/5

Re: A Guide : Eating Out In Mysore!

^ Mysore Pak - The most memorable one is from Sri Janardhan - Ramnagara town. A standard serving can easily give you a heart attack!!
In Mysore it is perhaps Mahalakshmi Sweets, they are very good quality and consistent. In Bangalore It would be Sri Venkateshwara sweets, In Jayanagar there is also a Sri Krishna sweets but not worth getting into that small lane when the other one exists.

Guru Sweets is one among several of the old style Sweet shops in Mysore, there are a few more shops near to Guru sweets in that market area with similar set up, stacking up the sweets on a platter with white thread to hold them in place. Looks very nice but I wont go near them.
