Your favourite type of Road?

I've been meaning to post this for a while. Over the last few years, with more journeys undertaken driving my own vehicle, I realized I like driving on ghats more than any other types of road. I find Mumbai-Pune EW to be boring and prefer NH4 for variety of reasons. Similarly dual lane highways provide for some additional thrill of overtaking and believing in capabilities of your vehicle. Bumper to bumper is about coordination. Congested city traffic is about being situationally aware and reflexes. Same for roads with broken surfaces.

So fellow BHPians - What is your favourite kind of road to drive on?
And Why?

Best on 2 Lane highways: Probably because I have done the bulk of driving on these type of roads. And brings excitement every now and then.

Worst: Single Lane highway, especially those on which the shoulders of the roads are atleast half a feet high, I hate to go offroad on this roads for letting each truck pass by.

Mild: 4 Lane highways, these are too boring to drive upon.

re: Your favourite type of Road?

In my wagon R, I prefer straight roads.
But love riding on curvy roads especially at night.

Enjoyed driving my rental Toyota Matrix on California 1.

For my bike, I absolutely love riding fast on broken tarmac. The kind of surface that results from complete official apathy The road that is all broken up but still carries the name of a national highway.

Love it when the bike flies over every bump. I feel like its on a magic carpet.
I usually lean towards the right and let the bike lean towards the left. So that there is a little bit more in balance.

Downside, the rims don't like it.

Prefer a 4 lane highway. A expressway if I am in mood. A 'autobahn' road if I can lay hands on a monster

I prefer Curvy ghat sections.
Had a great time gliding over NH 17 .

I am yet to explore the other roads to my heartfull, but a mix of all sections would make a true road trip for me.

re: Your favourite type of Road?

I love to ride on ghat roads and when there is no road.
Like country roads, 2 lane highways are ok, but 4 lane highways (like GQ) are boring, butgood for ripping the ride.

+1 – Love it when I fly past the broken tarmac and mud\trail roads – have put additional padding on the seat so that I can comfortably fly over bad roads

Absolutely love driving/riding on the ghat sections. Specifically when the tarmac is ripple free and smooth. NH4 beyond Kolhapur, Malshej etc are the stuff wet dreams are made of!

The same NH4 endless concrete straights between pune and kolhapur are a bore.

re: Your favourite type of Road?

On a bike: Single laned mountain roads - specially during the monsoons with intermittent landslides and waterfalls. Preferably without actual rain.

On a car: Repeat with an added dose of heavy rain and fog - wipers working, horns blaring with the heater turned up to prevent fogging inside

The clear winner here will be - Ghat roads. I wonder who would choose bumper to bumper / congested roads.

re: Your favourite type of Road?

When You have twisty hilly roads(NH49,MC Road ) mostly where you reside, especially with slow going traffic, You will prefer 4 lane highways more.

I think, Once in a While taking a tour to ghat road may be fun. . but it is no where interesting for the localites who may be hating for the ghats and narrow roads especially true for Hill Stations.

re: Your favourite type of Road?

Ghats/twisties anyday for me! Just did the hilly section near Palamner while returning back from BLR to Chennai and I was feeling like a racing driver! Will never forget the adrenaline rush and feeling I got. The curves are more attractive :P
