The laws need to be amended - you are right. Arizona, Nevada and some other states in the US have done just that to allow Google's car to be driven on the streets of their states. I'm not sure if VW group had to do something similar in Germany to test out their automated cars.

Ok. Point taken. However, our Indian Motor Vehicle Act then needs to be amended to accommodate such things. In our crowded country with daredevil mopeds and other denizens of the road, I think there is a far higher chance of mishap than perhaps there may be, in a less crowded, more spacious environment.

In this particular case, there is no need to amend the law, since it is not a driverless car. It is indeed a car with a driver, just that he is seated on a different seat.

Basically there should be guidelines on how to drive the car. Else this kind of stunting will become rampant as already is amongst some motorbikers who try to pop wheelies etc on the public roads...its quite fraught with danger just in case one loses control.

Laws will get ammended once the driverless car technology is fool proof and works with a high degree of reliability. Lets take the example of aviation. In case of a crash or accident, the insurance is easier to claim if the airplane was flying on autopilot instead of manual controls, the idea being, with autopilot the human factor of error is removed. As they say: The weakest link in the cockpit is the nut behind the controls

While driving in the crazy Saturday evening traffic in Koramangla, I was stuck behind this car which was being driven unusually slow even though there was an empty stretch ahead. I then noticed a message on the back of the car which said "caution - no driver in the car" (or something like that). For a moment I thought it was some joke, but then I got really curious and overtook the car to see if it was real. And it was!! Was really shocked to see there was no driver in the seat, but there was some box like device, and there was a guy in the co-driver seat. And no, this wasn't some hi fi car, it was an esteem!! Yes, the same Esteem!!

If he has indeed made it driverless, then he is india's answer to Einstein . Obviously this is some jugaad with some sort of hidden controls for the person on the passenger seat. But I was wondering, how could this mod happen with RTOs permission. Do they really allow this sort of a mod from an individual as this concerns the safety of others road users as well ?

Spotted the driverless esteem in Kormangala today. There was this guy in passenger's seat. He said the car is running based on inputs from sensors. Still wondering how that is possible for Indian conditions. The car was being driven in a perfectly normal manner - lane changing, braking- except it was a bit too slow.
One thing left me confused though. The car stopped when the signal turned red. Now how can the sensors know signal has turned red? Looks like there is some catch here.
As pointed by few above, it does look he's controlling it from passengers seat.

I think that the 'catch' has been caught a few posts earlier. The underlying syndrome 'At least give me some attention' has been the major reason!
