Re: Received a wrong traffic challan - Now what?

About a month ago, I was casually checking for traffic fines on the BTP website and noticed that I have a pending fine of Rs.3000 (triple riding, driving without helmet, pillion without helmet). There was a photo attached to the ticket and it appeared to be Honda Activa (I have a Royal Enfield). Due to the glare, one of the numbers was not visible in the photo and traffic police assumed a specific number and due to this, I was wrongly assigned a challan.

The good thing about Bangalore Traffic Police is that they are very active on twitter. The moment I posted the challan details and a photo of my bike, I received a reply that it would be corrected. When I casually checked after twenty days without much hope, to my surprise the violation was not in my name. So kudos to BTP on twitter.

Thanks to your note I contacted them on twitter as well. I had the same issue and they missed the two alphabets EQ instead of ED and can be genuine mistake. The violation was corrected in 5 minutes !!!.. Got a response on twitter that it is corrected and checked it already and it was gone. Kudos!!

Re: Your experience of being pulled over by a cop abroad

A similar incident. I recently got a challan from the Mumbai police for something not illegal. Since I am also an Emergency Animal Responder, had to rescue 2 cats from Dadar Beach, Yes Bank lane. Parked the car at the beach where normally everyone does and I too have been doing for past many years. Made a dash as the waves were massive, rescued the kitties and ran back to load them in the car. In the meanwhile I see a sms for a challan and was shocked to see a pic of my car in it with violation number MVA 122/177 stating: Causing danger/ obstructions or undue inconvenience to other users of public place to to the passengers by allowing the vehicle to be abandoned or to remain at rest on any public place. I was barely there for 15-20 mins and the locals also know of my rescue activities. Immediately contested the same by also adding my AWBI affiliation. Definitely not going to pay 500 bucks for saving lives!

You may be an animal rescuer sir. Unless you have strobe lights on your top - which are switched on - you get challaned like the rest of us. We should stop expecting special treatment (the 'VIP' culture) for all sorts of reasons.

How I hope our 'VIPs', and especially the police vehicles demonstrate observance of traffic rules by following them and not by breaking them. This is expecting too much in our republic, alas.

Lucky you! I noticed there is a violation on my bike's regn no. On checking the website its that 8737 has been been mistaken for my 3737 as the number plate fastening bolt was right on the number 8 making it look like 3.

I reported it on twitter. But till date - the violation remains!

Re: Received a wrong traffic challan - Now what?

Hey guys. First time poster and would really appreciate suggestions.

Last evening I was shocked to receive a notification on the mparovahan app for a Rs.500 challan against my drivers license. This was weird because I had just woken up at 4:30 pm (I do an night shift and wake up around 5pm most days) and the time of the challan was around that time.

I rushed to the PC and ran a check against the challan number and lo and behold there was a traffic violation for stopping a vehicle in a dangerous position. Weirdly the license was my own but the vehicle was a bike with a number I have no knowledge of + I hadn't left the house till that time yesterday.

So I decided to run check against my DL instead and found another violation for riding without a helmet in May 2020. Again the same thing. My license, but a totally random 2 wheeler that I have no knowledge of.

I approached the traffic cell last night and the officer ran a check and said "but this is paid no? Why are you bothered? Don't worry". I tried my best to convey that I'm not bothered about the payment, I'm concerned that a) maybe someone is using my DL illegally, b) if it's a clerical error this can be used against me if it continues happening c) I could lose my license based on more serious offences even if I'm not in the picture at all.

I'm not sure how to handle this. Both challans were paid up (not by me) and while the amounts are tiny, this makes it seems like I'm a habitual offender. I'm worried. What if this continues and there are more serious offences? Will my license be cancelled? These are obviously clerical errors.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Received a wrong traffic challan - Now what?

This morning I have received a Challan from Vahan by SMS issued against my car which was sold 4 years ago. A couple of months later after the sale, I have checked with the RTO and found that the car R/C was transferred into new owner's name.

After receiving the challan, I once again checked the details of the R/C which shows the new owner's name and not mine. It looks like whilst transferring the vehicle, the new owner have not updated with his mobile number and the R/C still carries my phone number.

The challan amount is Rs.250/- (not aware of what reason the challan is raised for).

What should I do now - is there anyway we can send a written complaint online to Vahan? In case I ignore the challan, will they send a reminder notice to the registered owner in which case the new owner will get the notice since the RC has the new owner's address?

Please advise/comment.

verbal complaints at police station stand no where. Give a written complaint. Get an ackl of the same. For a written complaint given I think there needs to be an action taken or there will be a suggestion given. Moreover there will be a record that you have complained before hand and will save from lot of hassles, just in case

You don’t need to do anything. The fine is on car and not mobile and as previous owner, you are only responsible for RC transfer in favour of new owner. You have done that and there is nothing to worry. Mobile number change is not your look out. Also I am not sure if there is an option to change mobile number. The mobile number gets added if you download mparivahan app. So if you never used mparivahan app, you are least likely to receive any challan on mobile but yes the challan will go to address mentioned in RC.

As a good citizen, if you know the new owner or you have his contact details, you can just forward him the message. However best is to keep silent unless he is indeed a friend and would not interpret anything otherwise.
By being silent both of you live peacefully till the time he is pulled by the same state cop who issued the challan.

I have an active mparivahan app which has the record of only my 3 existing vehicles and D/L details. But I didn't have the app installed when I had the old car which was sold 4 years back

I just have his postal address (obtained from the R/C) and no other contact. Even I don't know him personally.

Re: Received a wrong traffic challan - Now what?

Guys.. I need some help. Here is the situation:

1.) I sold my motorcycle towards the end of June.

2.) I insisted that the RTO transfer happen immediately. Since I have no faith in anyone else, I offered to do the process myself. So, I got my RTO agent to do the transfer and both the buyer and me submitted the signed forms to the agent that very evening of the sale. The RTO agent then carried the process forward and the transfer in registration was successfully carried out in about 4 weeks.

3.) By early August, I received the soft copy of the new RC in the name of the new owner also.

4.) On 12th October and on 13th December, well after the RC transfer was done, the bike got challanned for a non-moving offense - parked and obstructing traffic.

5.) The problem is that I keep getting the SMSes for the challans. I have written to MH traffic police at multimediacell.traffic@mahapolice.gov.in and at techsupport@mahatrafficechallan.gov.in. After many back and forths, they have sent me emails saying that my phone number is no longer associated with the motorcycle.

6.) And yet, today I received a Lok Adalat notice for unpaid challans.

My questions are as follows:

a.) How can I permanently remove my phone number and email from being associated with the motorcycle that has been sold?

b.) How I proceed with this notice that I have received? It is quite obvious that the new owner is least bothered to pay the challans.

Thanks

The phone number needs to be updated by the new owner by verifying the OTP and even though you're receiving SMS for challans, you only need to take care of the one's issued in your name, considering they have been sent to Lok Adalat, you can represent yourself there and just tell them that even though the bike was not in your possession you're willing to pay the fine and as it is in Lok Adalat the fine is reduced from the original amount.

Thank you for your clarification about OTP.

But, why should I pay the fine when I have not done anything wrong? The bike did not even belong to me when the challans were issued. So, why should I agree to pay any fine?

Isn't the person on the RC liable for this? That is not me as of July 2022, and definitely not me in October and December when challans were issued.
