re: 2021 Triumph Trident 660 unveiled. Edit: Now launched at 6.95 lakhs

Expecting customers to put down Rs 50,000 for booking a motorcycle with no price reveal and that hasnt even been reviewed by the international or local media, is rather ambitious.

While comparisons to the 4 cylinder rivals are inevitable, the weight differences are a big factor that can sway the decision Triumph's way. The Euro 5 Z900 weighs 212 kg (from Kawasaki India's website) and the CBR weights 208 kg (interweb information). Meanwhile the 189 kg weight of the Trident is 2 kgs lower than the Kawasaki Z650! The light weight of the Trident will appeal to buyers upgrading to big bikes for the first time as well as bikers who have several years of experience with big bikes and want something light and easy to use as a second / third bike in the garage.

Triumph has the ingredients in place for a smash hit in India - a lightweight, multi cyclinder bike with adequate power and please all styling. They only need to get their pricing right!

re: 2021 Triumph Trident 660 unveiled. Edit: Now launched at 6.95 lakhs

Pricing it between 6-6.5 lakhs and touching an onroad price of 7-7.5 lakhs is an ideal price for this. This is not a entirely new engine warranting more R&D. They have made minor changes to existing engine. If they price this with an ex-showroom of 7-7.5 lakhs then Triumph may not see expected sales for this.

Having said that, the KTM 490 twins if launched in 2021 should heavily tilt the scales in favour of the 490 twins over this bike. Agree that this would be a twin cylinder compared to the Trident but the power figures may match more or less. End of day with the KTM service and dealer network, it is much better dealing with KTM for service, spares and warranties than with a Triumph dealership.

Not sure why various media sources are qouting this price - which is clearly against the international positioning of the Trident 660.

In its home market - the Trident 660 is priced between the Ninja 650 and the Versys 650, for example.

Ninja 650 - £7,045 (~6.95 lakhs)
Trident 660 - £7,195 (~7.1 lakhs)
Versys 650 - £7,349 (7.25 lakhs)

Z900 - £8,899 (~8.89 lakhs).
Street Triple R - £9,100 (8.98 lakhs).

Considering the pricing in India for Ninja 650 is 6.24 lakhs and Versys 650 is 6.79 lakhs - Trident has to be priced at 6.5 lakhs IMHO.

6.75 is pushing it, but 7+ makes the Z900 at 7.99 lakhs look like a real bargain.

Want to downgrade from Street Triple to something less frantic and explosive. This seems like a good choice to me.

The Triumph Trident is about a 1000 pounds lesser than the Street Twin in UK. This is based on the price they announced during the launch event. Since the Street Twin is like 7.49 lakhs ex-showroom here in India, ideally they can target 6-6.5 lakhs ex-showroom price in India for the Trident. Will have to wait and watch.

Strange how nobody's posted this interview with Triumph's Chief Product Officer Steve Sargent which has been out for three weeks now.

Key takeaways:
A2 compliant
Z650 MT07 Rival

Which variant of the Striple do you ride. And is this in Seattle or Pune?

re: 2021 Triumph Trident 660 unveiled. Edit: Now launched at 6.95 lakhs

As per MCN - this 660cc motor of the Trident is not from the current Street Triple S, but is actually the old Daytona 675 motor with revised internals for a shorter stroke.

Quote:
Engines in the current Street Triple range (and Tiger 900s) use ‘dry’ cylinder liners. These are thin sleeves that slide into holes in a lightweight aluminium cylinder block, allowing tighter cylinder spacing for a more compact and lighter engine.

The 675cc engine used in early versions of the Daytona and Street Triple has ‘wet’ liners – cast iron tubes that stand in the middle of the block and are in direct contact with the coolant. Hence the ‘wet’ bit.

Wet-liner engines are heavier and generally larger. There are advantages, though: cooling is effective, and both the liners and block are easier to build. This means cheaper. And saving cash is the driving force behind reviving the engine for the Trident – not just Triumph’s cash, but yours.

Thank you, what impressed me the most was the peak torque output at relatively low range of 6250. If they get the pricing between 575 to 625 it should be a good option for people upgrading from the royal Enfield twins.
Can be a very good second bike for people with the SuperSport machines as it can give unhurried riding comfort for the odd 200 to 300 km breakfast ride. With the wider service intervals it does warrant a second look.

Totally in agreement. Infact I was wondering if this can replace my Ninja 650 though I doubt it'll tour as well as the Ninja. Eventually, the product seems pretty decent and it'll all boil down to the price. If Triumph can keep it around that 6 lac ex-shw mark to begin with then they should see this sell pretty decently as not much to compete with in that price bracket barring the Kawi 650 twins. Price it beyond the 7 mark and you risk getting swamped by the well-placed Z900.

This bike seems like a pocket rocket. It looks pretty small in all the photos so I highly doubt its touring abilities. This is a great bike for short rides and for the odd overnight trip. This doesn't seem like a great touring bike at all.

If Triumph prices the bike around 6.5l it will sound a death knell for the naked Z650. I can't imagine too many people choosing a run of the mill Z650 over this bike which given that its a mini Street Triple should be a real hoot to ride.

The price has been leaked in Indian Triump website. It mentions 6.95L onwards.
