+1 to both for me too! Having said that, I find below post to be very sound advice. And quite logical.

On the way to Leh it is best avoided!
Everyone spends a night at Manali and everyone suffers an acute headache and restless sleep at Sarchu nonetheless. That's because nights spent at 6000 or 7000 feet do not help towards acclimatization!

Anyone doing Road Trip to Leh?

Hi Guys,

Its been a dream for me to do a road trip to Leh ever since my mom had been to leh couple of years ago and she came back with lots and lots of great pics and wonderful tales about the ppl there.

I m from chennai and Leh is a looong way, not impossible, but in the current circumstances not possible for me. I have a long break from my business from the last week of August to the first week of September.

I was just wondering if anyone who is doing a road trip to Leh would be interested in taking me along. I have some experience in off road driving.

mods: just delete this post if i m breaking any rule. or move to the correct forum.

There are so many teams going on from Chennai and all over to Leh around that time.

I remember seeing many people asking for a partner to Leh in other forum, including some from chennai. PM me if you need more info.

Good luck.

There are a lot of people who are doing Ladakh from B'lore and Chennai. As mjothi said, there are a lot of people from the other forum who are going on bikes.

In case you are unable to find any partner then you fly down to Manali /Leh and go on Jeep Safari's to see the place. I have heard that you get share Taxi's from Manali to Leh.

Almost 8 years back i was a regular driver from Delhi to Manali and the stretch is doable in a days time, say took around 12 hour. And met lot of guys at Manali who were driving further to Leh, but of course the drive needs to be completed in a days time and having atleast two vehicles in convoy can be of great help, and at Manali you can find partners to do that at taxi hiring places. But do check with local drivers at Manali before proceeding further and the road remains closed for normal traffic from November through February

You don't necessarily have to do the Canon Ball Run. One can and should take a break either at Keylong, Jispa or Sarchu and then proceed to Leh. It is better and helps in acclimatising as well.

GD, Sarchu only compounds the AMS problem rather than help alleviate it.
I'd say Keylong, Jispa or Darcha are best for an overnight halt as these are close to the altitude of Leh. Sarchu is much higher and almost all people staying the first night there after Manali have a bad night there.

Leaving on 21st.
APS, since you are going before us, can you update on Rohtang Jam status etc., if possible.
Send an SMS or something like "all clear, no jams" or "Hell has broken loose, and entire india has descended on Rohtang"
Mid to end july situation was horrendous, I hope on the 21st weekend things are better

I just don't understand this whole "intimate about Rohtang" nonsense.

Why can't you guys leave at 330-400am the time that taxis leave?

If you will leave at 8am, you will always get alot of jam 2 hrs, 3 hrs - how does it matter?

@evo: that confluence is just (maybe a nice) a festival that happens to be at ladakh. No reason why one must spend one's hard earned leaves for non-ladakhi fare. Or am I missing something? Posted ditto on another forum. got unconvincing replies!

Yes - leaving Chandigarh on the morning of 16th August. Couple of days in Manali & then onto Leh. On a bike though - what form of transport will you be in?
