Humming usually indicates a bearing issue.
Now there are lots of bearings which run when engine is running.
You have AC compressor bearings, idler bearing, engine bearings etc.,
Can also be the Alternator bearing, or power steering pump bearing.
There is no easy way to diagnose this, you have to proceed step by step.
For example, lets say the culprit was power steering.
Now with car stationary and engine on, and humming, turn steering left to right fast. This puts load on power steering, and the humming noise will change in pitch/volume.

Ditto for AC, if on turning on AC, the sound changes, its the AC compressor bearing.

Thanks for your inputs. I will suggest these things to the service personnel so that we can catch the culprit. Will keep you all posted on this as soon as I get a reply from them

Anand.

Yes, I feel that it's essential to get a break up of the labour charges. I once discovered that a simple replacement of fog lamps was billed as Rs. 450/- by the A.S.S., just for the labour !

They do charge sometimes for cleaning the car as well. With the amount of money they absorb, i think they should not charge for services like this.

Well, i believe they have pre-defined fee for each hour of working for the labor charges incurred and it also depends on the work. If people ask them for a break up , they would surely come out with a big story convincing us about the work timings. I assume so.
Probably M&M should come up with a structure for that or If existed should be reviewed.

It happens if it detects that the doors have been opened but the key has not been inserted in the ignition within a certain number of seconds. In case someone opens a door forcibly, the alarm (in its case the Horn) goes off as well apart from the immobiliser getting activated.

It could be the same in your vehicle, particularly if the doors had not locked earlier (as pointed out by Raj) or if someone tried opening a door.

In Scorpio, when you unlock the car with central locking remote, after getting inside when you shut the door, the lock sign starts to blink. It suggests that the central locking system has been activated & after certain amount of delay it will be armed. As soon as that time is over (programable) the central beeps once & the blinking stops. Now if you open the door without unlocking it will open but trigger the alarm.

& Thank You all guys my Late starting problem in the morning has been resolved after service, so it may be due to clogged diesel filter & coolant being less.

Few queries on Scorpio mHawk refresh model usage:

a) Increasing the pickup of MIC supplied with Nippon Bluetooth system:
where is the MIC located? It is shown in the wiring diagram but not on schematics of the interirors. By any chance is it at the front center of the roof (right above the central rear view mirror)
on handsfree bluetooth, is there any control to increase the MIC sensitivity except for BVOL settings (it also increases the speaker volume to deafening levels)

b) Since Scorp does not have full fledged hill descent control, is it advisable to engage 4-Lo when going down steep gravel slopes for engine braking rather than burning brakes? I dont want it to go beyond 5 kmph on a particualr slippery slope without engaging brakes.

c) Would putting a sunfilm on the front windscreen (on the inside) screw up the rain and light sensor in anyway. There is a note in manual to avoid using any chemicals on the windscreen from inside. Is the sensor based on Infrared/Total Internal reflection to detect water?

d) stupid question - by any chance does ABS gets disabled once you put the car in 4WD (lo/high?)

Thanks in Advance...

One more,
when I really need to get a quick start (early morning run to catch the school bus), I have found that the immobilizer lock pattern - and I usually press all 3 buttons on remote in quick succession in random sequence to get it unlocked and started again.

can someone please explain what "tampering" really means as per the discussions which happened around wolfheart's scorp and the pesky kids.

The central locking system is deactivated by the door switch being activated when you open the door. But if you unlock and DON'T open the door, the lock sign will blink and rearm the system within 60 seconds.

In your case, I think a faulty door switch is not allowing the CL to be deactivated, so it rearms after you've got into the car. Therefore the alarm goes off when you open the door again, because the CL system detects unauthorized entry.

Please check the functioning of the door switch, or open another door and see if the blinking lock sign goes off.

Dear SS ,

Thats what i exactly meant , if you see i wrote, "when you get inside & shut the door" but do not plug the key or in other words just unlock & stand outside you can see the blinking & it will rearm itself in 60 secs & blinking will stop

I think it is better to use first gear and some mild braking. It is okay to use 4Low if you are coming straight down the slope (without having to turn the vehicle) or the slope is slippery enough to damage a part time 4WD system.

Regardless of slope or not the part time 4WD system cannot be used on dry pavement if the wheels unless you are moving only in a straight line.

Not sure how Mahindra's ABS works but many foreign 4WD have a different setting for ABS in low range which allows a little more wheel lock-up than in regular mode.

Hi Capt. Congratulations, I think you would be the only BHPIAN with a Scorpio whose 3rd Gear does not viberate.

Can you provide some details of the kit installed so that others like me can also insist on the same from the M&M.

Greetings Bhp-ians,

I am happy to inform you all that the Third gear vibration in my Scorpio has ceased finally after the installation of the kit provided by Mahindra and Installed by A.S.S. ( CAI Industries, Coimbatore ).

It took about Two and Half days for the A.S.S. to return me the vehicle after i had left it to install the kit and do my 50,000 km service. Finally, i got it today and I am very happy to see the vibration not existing.

and this is how it happened, I had to written to the customer care about 3 weeks ago about the vibrations i had on the 3rd gear. I had the Customer Care people calling me about 3-4 times asking me about the service centers where i service my vehicle. Another couple of days later , i had the customer service manager of the A.S.S. calling me to tell me that , this problem has been talked to Mahindra and they have got a kit to install to get that problem solved. So, Finally i had left the car for service which was also ready for the scheduled 50k maintenance and i got the car with the problem not existing.

Thank you Mahindra ! You have done a great job !

None of the three mHawk 4WDs with BHPians have this problem either.

Thank you m_upreti, I am not sure about the details of the kit ( even though it was explained to me ), however you can write to customercare@mahindra.com and also contact the customer care manager at your Authorized Service Station for details. Which in my case was Mr.Dilip from CAI Industries, Coimbatore. You can also talk to him at 0422-4336699 in case you need further details on the same.
Do let me know, if i could help you with something else.

hey guys,

I've just returned from the ASC after dropping my car for servicing. Here's the estimate that they gave me on the job card:

Paid service, 1,000/-
Replace of Engine Oil, Oil Filter, Differential, Gear oil, 3,900/-
Brake Clean, 450/-
A/c Filter clean, 150/-
Consumable 200/-
Service Plus, 450/- (I asked what this is and the rep said that the window mechanism catches rust / grease and we service it. He said it's necessary. However I still have my doubts)

This totals to Rs. 6,150/-

I have also asked them to check a few other issues which are mentioned on the job card, however no amount is mentioned. These are:

LH. Fr Seat Noise (Theres a slight noise in the passenger seat backrest when braking)
ORVM glass vibrates
Check Vaccum Modulator (don't know why he's mentioned this)
Whistling noise in A/c sometimes ( I asked him to check the A/c expansion valve. I had been advised about the same earlier on this thread)
Check Suspension ( I have only asked him to tighten nuts and lubricate all the bushes)
LH RR Seatbelt cover loose
RH Seat Skirt fix properly (driver side plastic skirting on the side of the seat has come off)

They also advised wheel balancing and alignment, however I said that we'll do that next time as I need the car delivery by evening. Then he tried to sell me the engine bay lamination / lacquering service as it protects he hoses. I declined politely.

I have also asked him to change the security code of the vehicle from the default one. I thought I'd do it myself but didn't want to screw anything up. Is it safe for the service centre guys to know your car's security code?

I'll keep you guys posted on the progress.

Cheers

@Wolfheart, Do you need to change differential oil & gear oil at 20k ? Pls check your owner's manual for schedules for these two & confirm.

Shucks I left the owners manual in the car! I don't know, the rep has recommended it! Should I be asking him to stop?

One of the easier ways to localize the humming to a particular component (AC compressor, water pump, idler pulleys, steering pump, alternator etc.) is to use a stethoscope (MECHANIC'S STETHOSCOPE; Chain Auto Tools & Accessories). In the absence of one, improvisation can be done using a long (18" +) screwdriver - placing the tip on the relevant area and listening with the ear to the handle. Careful about getting the tip fouled with moving parts.

Thank you for the suggestion i will try it out and let you know the result will also consult with the service people about it

Anand
