as i said in the ownership thread of my old scorpio non-CRDe, it is suffering from high engine noise & vibration. even the NVH of a tempo seems to be better now. it has done 1.9 lakh kms till now.

..........................

i need your suggestion guys. what do you think?

1) will a fuel pump service solve the noise & vibration issue?
2) should the engine mounts be changed?
3) is it necessary to change the timing chain? it has already been changed once in mumbai at about 80,000 kms.

regarding the issue, spoke to the service advisor at mahindra's A.S.S in kerela just now. according to him, the main issues are-

1) engine mounts need to be changed- Rs. 2500
2) Fuel pump kit needs to be replaced- Rs. 7000
3) Timing pulley assembly needs to be replaced- Rs. 18,000 :Shockked:

all figures are approximate.

out of these, (1) & (3) needs to be done ASAP & only if we need more improvement, (2) should be done.

Timing pulley assembly is not in stock & they have ordered it in mahindra & cannot say a definite date when it will arrive!!! anyways, they have already ordered it & will call us when the part arrives from the factory.

Proper way which is followed at A.S.S is to use a metal / plastic scale to measure from lowest point below the suspension that is the metallic base plate below coil springs to level ground.

Same should be repeated for front suspension as well.

If they are not equal or more then prescribed value then Shim adjustment needs to be done.

Take care of this at priority because it may eat up tyres.

What about the old fashioned water level thingy that is normally used for construction, shouldn't that show if there is indeed a tilt or not?

Raj, do visit this thread - http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/modifi...-replaced.html

Spirit level / water level can only tell if there is a tilt at the point where level is kept. But if this tilt is due to misaligned suspension height or not can not be decided for certainty.
Anyway tilt is visible from naked eye so a water level will only reconfirm that :)

thanks for the link gd. i saw that you have replaced the mounts at 67k. mine has covered 1.9L kms till now & every time i requested the A.S.S to change the mounts, they would say it is in a fine condition! guess i made it too late.

this time they are saying the front two mounts of the engine needs to be replaced whereas the rear mount of the gearbox is fine. since it does not cost much (Rs. 350 as per your post), i am thinking to get that replaced as well. what is your opinion?

i was thinking that i would give the car a thorough check up & also drain the entire engine oil using engine flush & fill in new engine oil. i was also planning to change the differential oil & coolant as well. will this make a good difference?

i saw that you used engine flush & used 6.5 litres of Mobil Delvac. what is your opinion on this? i think the A.S.S uses mahindra maximile, is that good enough?

Raj, something is not quite right here!
If it is NVH that you are trying to control, here is what I feel:
The engine mounts need to be changed.
The timing chain never needs to be renewed!
The fuel pump 'kit' will have minimal effect on NVH, unless the metering is totally messed up! Though I am not quite sure what this kit is. Some more details, please.
Why does the timing pulley assembly need renewal? :Shockked:
At most it should be the bearings/bushes.

hello anup sir.

yes, the engine mounts will be changed.
the fuel pump is a MICO unit & they say it will be replaced or repaired only we say so.

the timing pulley is changed because it has come loose & it may anytime pop out during running causing a breakdown. the pulley is making a different rattling kind of sound since it is loose.

Hi Raj,
I changed my engine mounts last month, felt a lot of improvement in NVH.
In my opinion, please do this first and see the results, before pumping in more moolah for the rest of the repairs, which may not be needed at all!

Nothing that a change of bearings will not fix.
I still feel this is all that is needed.

the headlamp and the fixings costs around 6 -6.5grand.

Bonnet would be much more expensive - atleast 10K in my opinion - why not consider a tinker job?

Or else, claim insurance for the damage in case it has been caused by an accident.
I would be surprised if you get away from the repairs spending any less than 18K-20k.

Sorry i forgot to mention in my earlier post that I need to change the bonnet too. Can somebody please let me know the price of doing the above two things?

sir, since the car is in kerela & i am in mumbai, i am not able to personally check the car. that is also one of the reasons for the negligence towards basic maintainence of the car by the drivers there. i am getting only telephonic reports.

shocking part is the entire timing assembly has been changed once at 89k kms. now again it is demanding replacement. i have anyways asked the A.S.S to order the kit (just in case) but have not given them any assurance that we will change it.

i guess i have to personally inspect the damage now.

Change all the three mounts to save on dual labour and that's a good practice too.

Run the truck for 20 kms and then drain engine oil. It shall completely drain when warm. If you have been servicing the car regularly with oil changes then flushing is not required. It is done to remove any sludge.

Gearbox & Diff oils need replacement at every 20K kms. The transmission system will be smoother. The coolant at 50K Kms.

Delvac is an excellant oil and your engine would love it too. There will be a marked improvement in the engine sound and you shall experience improvement in pick-up and emissions will be lesser.

Suggest getting a nozzle & pump service done. It will enhance the engine life and you shall be surprised by the results..

i guess i will drain the oil anyways using engine flush & use delvac. is delvac supplied from mahindra or will we have to source it from outside?

yes, even i was thinking of a fuel pump service. i think they do the nozzle service along with that, i will have to get it confirmed.

I ve had 2 dicey experiences with my 2.6 Crde's standard Non ABS brakes.

Once around 6-9 months ago on the Mysore highway while doing about 100kmph a little dog ran out on to the main road from a roadside temple (after McDonalds etc). I rammed the gear into 2nd straight from 5th and slammed the brakes on at the same time.
The wheels locked and the vehicle skidded quite a bit till I pumped the brakes and steered into the skid. The vehicle squealed leaving rubber skid marks on the road and came to a stop after around 40 metres. Luckily the dog escaped relatively unhurt, though the side of my tyre hit him and caused his ear to bleed. Poor chap. I stopped and found out he belonged to the temple priest who hadnt tied him up that morning. Quietly prayed at the shrine and left.

Last Friday, driving near Agara lake I must have been doing about 70kmph since the road was quite empty at 2pm in the afternoon. Was accelerating just after taking the right turn at the lake towards HSR Layout/BDA. Was in the fast lane when suddenly an idiot in a Maruti Van zoomed across from the other side of the road towards a break in the divider. In front of me was an Indica taxi who decided at the last minute to take a right turn exactly there without benefit of the indicator. On my left was a fool motorbike overtaking me on the left and going at a pretty high speed.
I was faced with a choice of ramming the Indica, ramming the divider or wiping that motorbike from the face of the earth in case my Scorp didnt stop. Slamming the vehicle into 2nd, from 4th, turning the wheel left to avoid the Indica + Van and jamming the brakes at the same time, I distinctly felt a wobble and then went into a dry skid at an angle towards the left. Wheels locked of course and luckily the vehicle slid to a halt a good 10 feet from the Indica's rear. The motorbike had sped past on the left.

I now believe that I simply must have ABS and Airbags in my next vehicle.

Till then, I need to know is there anything that I can do to the current brakes to strengthen their stopping power?

ABS is definitely recommended in the scorpio, safari & innova buddy. good that you & your vehicle escaped unhurt.
