Now the car refuses to slot into first gear. Same problem as before but with 1st gear. The dealer checked and has told me its a problem with 1st gear synchro, apparently others are also facing similar issues. The batch to which my Swift belongs has defective gear synchros.

He has ordered the part and it will take 2 days for it to come. Damn MSIL and their cost cutting.

@Busa: why dont you push the dealer for gear box replacement instead, since you have a good rapport with them.

@lambhuere - My car is May batch. I dont think your batch of cars have this problem.

@KP & Jaggu - They have identified problems with just 1st and 2nd gear, and its not with just my car, many cars are facing it. Getting a gearbox replacement will be time consuming and also not that easy. Anyways lets see what can be done.

Spoke to the dealer, he said that since the gearbox is integrated in the engine, it is not a easy task to replace the whole gearbox.

Integrated in the engine?

The clutch comes in between these two, right? I think he meant that the engine may have to be taken out to dissassemble the gearbox.

D Company asking so many questions in a single post.

I think crazy is right, he meant something like that, but they do remove the engine to change the synchros, then why the fuss?

I asked cause I thought that you can remove it by removing the sub frame below. That's how I think it's in the petrol swift and in the lancer. Correct me if I am wrong.

Cost cutting was involved

I know for sure cost cutting was involved but I thought that it was restricted to cars sold only in the northern part of Kerala. Majority of the swifts sold there tried an Indian made component from another manufacturer/vendor. I heard it was clutch plate now it looks like the syncros are involved in this too. Best of luck. Bye and wear your seat belts.

@ Vid - I have seen the MSIL guys remove the engine to remove the gearbox, last time when there was a second gear issue, maybe the engine bay is too cramped to work on with the engine intact.

Vid
U are right about the Swift P and lancer but in case of Swift D the engine has pulled out for removing the gear box.
The reason is the limited space in the engine bay to put in the tools.

First engages with difficulty, when the car is in motion and i want to slot first then it just doesnot go, while the car is standing still it engages perfectly.
