Engine oil change at 5000 or 10000 km?

Am having lancer diesel, i have changed oil in nearby garage with 15/40 pennzoil which costs about Rs.675/- . but once i went to lancer authorised showroom , their service display board says have to change oil for 10000kms (i think its for new vehicle) .

But am confused that whether to change oil at 5000 kms or 10000kms? if 10000kms, then which oil should be used and what is its cost?

Check your owner's manual for the correct Oil change interval, follow it.

I would never suggest a 10,000 km oil change interval unless you don't care about the longevity of the engine.
6,000 kms on mineral oil is a good interval. above 7,500 kms is not advisable.

and also change oil every 4 to 5 months even if your usage has not crossed say 6000kms.

imho - reduce the change to 3 months if you have an overheating engine.

Even for Petrol engines I change oils bit early. For innova 10,000km is prescribed one but I change it once in 7500km. I suggest change the oil once in 5000km for Diesel engines or 6 months and 7500km or 9 months for Petrol Engines. Please note that there are few exceptional cars and i am talking about mineral oil.

Regards,

Ravi.

most people who have posted here so far are saying the right thing IMO
change every 5000kms(mineral or semisynthetic)
if its fully synthetic, use it a bit longer-10000kms, though, that will work out to be a very expensive affair.

@ all
Thanks for you valuable comments, so i conclude to change oil every 5000 - 6000 kms, i use mineral oil, because of cost factor.

For the Lancer diesel, make sure the oil you use is API-CF4 certified.
There are a lot of branded oil with pathetic API-CC/CD grade too.
Hence the warning.

Do not get miserly

Yup! You will see the same thing on all the North American car/truck web sites. They say the same thing. Change the oil and filter. It is the one huge thing you can do to prolong the life of your motor. Whether synthetic or mineral check your manual and get the best oil that you can buy. And change the filter, too. If your diesel is brand new then a change at 5000 was doubly important as it removed new motor break in debris. Keep up the good work!

How many kms you've logged on your Lancer? IMO, switch on to Mobil1 and with regular oil & filter changes at every 6K, your car should give you trouble free service for long..

5000K is the figure for normal Mineral oil.

Synthetic is recommended to be changed at 10K. Synthetic is very expensive, but is recommended.

OT: Our relatives have of late started to use this in their Lancer D ( done 72K approx ). They now use Mobil 1 after my suggestion and now they find the car better.

10k is under ideal condition of driving in clean highways with no short start and go which breaks down even the best oil. Switch to HDEO like Delo 400 or Delvac MX and change at 6000km, remember, oil is cheaper than the engine in any case.
