Stumbled upon this thread while I was researching for a good 5w30 engine oil for my Nexon diesel.
Thanks in advance. |
I haven't used this one but can tell you that Mobil 1 - 5w30 in my maruti DDIS diesels makes them purr.
how is the quality of Shell Helix HX6 5w30 for bs6 diesel engines ??? Or is it a bs6 petrol engine specific oil.

HX6 is rated API SP/CF. It is good for BS6 petrol engines and barely OK for bs4 diesels. Do not use this in a BS6 diesel.
Hi hserus.
I have been reading your contribution on this thread since years but finally my membership was approved and i can connect with you.
What is your opinion on a decent aftermarket engine oil for BS6 mahindra diesels like Thar, scorpios and XUV.
I have noticed that the Maximile Ultra V4(Black can) is marginally better than the Normal Maximile Ultra (Golden can) with respect to vibration and smoothness.
Since we are all in darkness regarding the grading and weight of the recommended oil i am very confused whether to go for ACEA C2 / C3 / A3B4 types synthetic oil.
Please share your expert opinion.
BS6 diesels - don't take an A3/B4
Use an ACEA C3 or API CK4 oil of some sort and you should be fine for any BS6 CRDI.
Plenty to choose from. Motul 8000 SUV and Castrol Magnatec SUV are reasonably priced and fit this spec for instance. Expensive - Castrol Edge, Amsoil Turbo Truck, Motul 8100 X-Clean+ etc.
Otherwise, especially given your BS6 vehicle is most likely still under warranty, sticking to the manufacturer provided Maximile V4 won't hurt either your engine or your pocket, plus it is widely available in India even at outside stores.

Thank you so much for your valuable input. Will go with motul or Castrol suv and update.
P.s. Mahindra Maximile are almost no where available in delhi NCR atleast. Maybe down south they have better availability.

I am using Gulf Formula Elite acea C3 5w30 in diesel bs6 mahindra thar. Changed a couple of hundred kms ago, some observations.
* engine sounds quieter on startup
* top end of rpm is slightly lesser enthu than maximile ultra
* maximile ultra is semi-synthetic 0w20 for sure and ultra v4 is fully synthetic 0w20
* mileage seems to have increased drastically, now the fuel gauge barely moves after 100 kms
* there is a slight compromise on performance with 5w30
* post 5000 kms maximile ultra is a fuel hog

if you use 0w20 most likely acea c5 on a high torque diesel just change every 5k km.
Or get a 0w20 that supports vw 509 00 - very robust spec that goes over and above acea specs and has a long drain interval.

Brother are you 100% sure its 0w20? How did you find out if you don't mind me asking?
I am also eyeing on the gulf elite and it is on very lucrative discounts right now for around 1750 rupees for 4L.
If its 0w20 I'll try to find something value for money in that grade as my first preference.

there is a tappet sound on cold startup in engines that comes only with a 0wXX oil. It isn't audible in 5w/10w or 15w oils. I hear that with the maximile ultra nxt gen.

I managed to find the spec of the older oils thanks to seeing Mahindra manuals for European export versions .. old green can feo is 5w30 a5b5 for instance.
Well spotted on the 0wXX oil - quite common in several bs6 oem oils.

yes used in all diesel bs6 high-performance cast aluminum engines like harrier, jeep compass, hyundai diesels & this is the reason

Auto majors will move to thinnest grade oils for qualifying as bs6 but customers need to be more selective. Offroading or getting engine under high load situations with thinner oil grades like 0w20 is risky proposition.
For casual day-to-day humdrum a bs6 0w20 oil will suffice, but when engine is put under load like offroading or long distance motoring the 0w20 is bound to give compression issues sooner than later.
In extremely hot weather the 0w20 may not provide protection like a xxw40 oil
There is also a small matter of oil dilution of engine oil with diesel due to dpf which turns the already thin 0w20 into 0w16 or worse.
So select your oils as per your usage patterns while sticking to specified grade.

Normally, when you move from a "lighter" oil to a "heavier" oil FE would be the first to get penalized along with performance as added viscosity means added resistance.
Again, FE drop wouldn't be drastic but would definitely be felt.
In your scenario there is a drastic improvement in FE by moving to an oil with higher viscosity, but there is a drop in performance.
Per chance you did something else as well nearer to or along with the change in engine oil that contributed to the higher FE?

the new maximile ultra performs Ok for about a couple of thousand kms, gives good mileage also along with performance, then starts to degrade very rapidly and by about 5k loses oomph totally post which compromise is not on performance but mileage.
