SZ plus is a much loved engine, I would be hesitant to experiment with an oil like that.

It looks like a cheap ci4+ and if it conforms to that standard it won’t hurt your engine.

You can try a api ci4+ or better still ck4 from some more reputable manufacturer and that’d be better than trying unknown brands on your mechanic’s say so - shell rimula r4, Mobil delvac, Castrol crb turbomax, motul tekma mega fleet uld etc

I would steer clear of unknown brands and stick to the well known ones like Shell or Mobil.

Go for oil from reputed brand - Castrol, Shell, Valvoline, Mobil, Motul etc.

Your Scorpio might be happier with CH4 spec instead of the CI4+. I would definitely not recommend CK4. From what I have heard from an oil chemist, CH4 has the most base oil and lesser additives. CI4+ has more additives than base oil. Not that it is a bad thing, but older cars prefer more base oil + less additive package.

I think Mahindra FeO is more than sufficient for your 2005 vintage engine. Tata also has a rebranded Mobil oil as a TGMO 15W40 CH4. That is also an excellent oil if you wish to try.

I used 5W30 (could not get 5W40 as suggested in manual at time ) magnatec in SX4 diesel. and observed very high consumption of oil almost 500 ml for 600-800 KM. Current Odo is 55K km.

Considering to change to shell Helix 5w40.

I'm no expert but it is not possible to have more additives than base oil in engine oils. Maybe the % of base oil is higher in CH4 than in CI4+.

CK4 is far more robust across all parameters than CH4 / CI4+, fully backwards compatible to these older specs, and is not going to hurt any CRDI engine, especially one that is specced to also run on a low viscosity oil like green FEO (which is a 5w30 A5/B5).

Scorpio, Fortuner, Endeavour, Safari etc will do very well on CK4, no issues

Dear Colonel sir, my apologies for the late response. I was a bit occupied due to a personal situation.

Hyundai specifies that we can use either C5, C3 or C2 grade oil in the diesel engine. They also provide a range of oils that can be used depending on the temperature range the vehicle is used in.

I spoke to the service manager who mentioned that oil dilution isn’t a problem (I don’t think he could’ve anything other than this that can be quoted against him :coldsweat). He was of the opinion that changing the oil at 5k interval isn’t necessary and asked me to stick to the regular service interval. I then spoke to the service advisor who checked the oil level which was at the exact max level and was not above it. He also told that the oil quality was still good and not to change it now (the running was 5400kms). He rather asked me to get the oil service done at around 8000-8500 mark and go for the fully synthetic oil (0w30). So, that is what I’ve decided to do.

Now, coming to the oil grades that they have -

1. Fully synthetic Shell helix ultra AH 0w30 C2 grade oil. These come in 5 litre cans that have the Hyundai branding on them.
2. Semi-synthetic Shell 0w20 C5 grade oil that comes in a barrel.
3. Semi-synthetic Servo 0w20 C5 grade oil that comes in a barrel.

Other than this, I enquired at two separate services centres in Bengaluru and one of them stocks Servo while the other stocks Shell (both synthetic and semi-synthetic). Both have 0w30 grade oils.

So here's what a 0w20 oil looks like after barely 6000 km. Almost as thin as water. Nod politely to the SA, then after 5000 or so km just change oil to a ACEA C3 5w30 or 5w40 somewhere outside using an OEM filter.

I am not entirely sure how this oil is going to run for the suggested 15000 km.

I agree, the oil in my car was barely sticking to the dipstick lol:. The Bengaluru service centre that uses Servo, confirmed that the fully synthetic oil they have is of C3 grade 0w30. While the semi-synthetic oil is C5 0w20.

Looking at the thin oils used I’ve a strong urge to go with 0w20 C5 oil every 5000km. If going for 5w30, wouldn’t changing the oil from outside affect the warranty?

Once it is poured in your engine and has gone black how is your dealership mechanic or SA going to tell the difference?

Quietly change it to a reasonable oil outside. The 0w30 is going to be acea c2 if I don’t miss my guess. Possibly on the c3 border, with a HTHS of 3.5 (the limit at which c2 ends and c3 starts). If you pick such a 0w30 oil, pick something that complies with vw 504/507 as it will be much more robust than standard c2 or c3 oils.

Pretty much the Kia SM said too lol:. They dont seem to be concerned about oil dilution and not at all interested in recommending an early oil change either. We recently got the 10k kms service done at 8.5k kms and would change the oil every 5k kms going forward. Here is the post:

Unlike Hyundai, Kia India uses only Ow20 C5 grade oil for the same engine. Not sure why. But I feel it should do as long as one changes the oil every 5k kms.

The Shell 0W30 costs almost ₹1200 per liter, for the Creta it costs around ₹6000 for the oil change whereas the 0W20 Shell C5 costs only ₹350, costing around ₹1700 for an oil change.
Thats almost 3.5x the price for synthetic. Hyundai should reduce the prices for the Shell synthetic oil, 3.5x is not worth it, it instantly bumps up the annual service charges to VW levels.:Frustrati

Synthetic is okay till around ₹900, close to what Suzuki or Volkswagen charges.

I am sticking to semi synthetic and 5000km change for now.

Absolutely! I’ll be going tomorrow to the ASC to get the oil changed. The ODO stands at about 5400kms. With the summer in effect now and with a couple of out station trips planned, I wouldn’t want to run on watery thin diluted oil.

I thought the semi synthetic oil was about ₹400 and the synthetic one about ₹950 per litre. ₹1200 is just too much from Hyundai! And as you said, not worth it. Will change the oil every 5k kms going forward. It will be cheaper and engine would get fresh oil often!
