There should be some tests or ways to find whether the oil is Synthetic or Mineral!:Frustrati

Anurag.

The case is true for K series engines. You can safely go for Delvac MX.

Ya, but that not necessarily mean that the filled oil is synthetic. Even semi synths can be stretched till 10k. Was it mentioned in the circular that synthetic oil from the factory is responsible for changing the drain interval ?

Pls find the link to the circular which says the grade is 5W40

Makes sense then. Looks like its indeed a synthetic oil filled form the factory since mineals and semi synth are not usually available in 5W40 grade. Thanks

@Anurag, you would be wasting synthetic oil if you make the oil change at 5K kms. Another viable alternative would be to get only the oil filter changed. Any suspended metallic particles would be caught by the filter. Then just top up with the synthetic oil till it reaches F mark on the dipstick.

A good quality oil will have higher Total Base No. (TBN). The oil with higher TBN will prevent degradation and remain more stable towards its entire usage of 5K KM.

One of the way to find it is to do a used oil analysis.

I have to change oil in every 5 month or so. So, I just thought that spending 3K for oil change every 5 month is not VFM for me. That is why I stick to good mineral oil and change it every 5K KM (every 5 month). I used Castrol magnatech, castrol GTX D, Mobil Delvac MX, Gulf Max TD and Shell Helix HX 6 D. The best among these is the shell oil. Initially I was also going solely by oil rating but after reading a lot of good stuff about the Shell oil I decided to give it a try and I'm a convert now clap:.

@archat - Glad to know that there are other CI4 oils especially mineral oils. Didn't know much about TBN. Beauty of the forum is we keep learning every day. Am glad that you are completely satisfied with Shell's mineral oil which meets your requirement. Any reason you change oil once in 5 months instead of kms covered ??

There isnt any facility in India to have used oil analyzed. How I wish ?

As I have clearly mentioned in my previous posts that the Shell was used by MASS for the oil change in my Ritz VDi.

The car has not seen an oil change till date. What ever experience I have posted was with the Ritz which MASS themselves add.

Shall see what MASS do when I take the Swift for service.

Anurag.

@Anurag - So your experience is similar to mine. I also opted for synthetic oil to be provided by MASS and I found the oil not to be great. Infact I went to the extent of asking did you guys even change the oil as there was no change in engine note. Hence decided to hand them over the oil after a long discussion

Anurag, I doubt if they stock delvac 1 at service center. Confirm with them which oil they use once you go for service.

Check if you can get your own engine oil without voiding warranty . if no issues get the delvac 1☺

They do stock it but they like Shell compared to any other brand which probably is an indication of the margins on it. :Frustrati

70K & 80K Service = Synthetic Oil (5W40) - Shell (99999MS5W40-SHL)

100K Service = Synthetic Oil (5W40) - Castrol (99999MS5W40-CAS)

Though for the 90K service I tried Delvac 1.

Shall try using Delvac 1 again for the Swift and see if I find any difference. The only confusion I am in is whether to buy synthetic oil or Mineral oil for the oil change that I will do on my own when the car reaches 5K which is a few days far away. MASS says first oil change is at 10K but I want to change the oil and oil filter.

Anurag.

Pls. do try Delvac 1 and keep us posted about your findings and experience:thumbs up

I'm very much satisfied with Shell :). Normally I drive around 1500 KM in a month. So, ideally the oil change should be done every 4th month. But since Maruti recommends oil change at 10K KM I take the liberty to change oil at 7.5K KM or 5 month.

I agree with you. I drive 3000-3500 kms a month so I keep giving the car for service every 3 months. I will be sticking to manufacturer recommendations for the grade but first I'll change the oil and the filter at 5K kms.

Anurag.

Is there any 'expiry' date for engine oil? I have an option to buy 20 ltrs of chevrolet OEM engine oil at a big discount .it's manufactured 8/12. There's no expiry date mentioned on any of the oil cans I've seen.

Plan to use the oil asap in 3 cars and keep the rest for topups .

It depends on the storage condition of the can. The thing AFAIK is the oil gets thicker with storage and non-usage so it will be lesser viable and effective if poured into the engine which will hardly help in lubricating as a thinner oil will do a better job. Advisable to buy the fresh oil and use it as it is better to pay up more for the oil than for engine work. :)

IIRC the date printed on the label is the expiry date. Right? Please correct me if I an wrong.

New swift diesel is filled with FS oil right from factory.

1st oil change has to happen as soon as the run-in is over be it synthetic or mineral oil.
During the Run-in/break-in, fine particles remain suspended in oil which even the oil filter can't separate.
These particles may embed onto the bearing surface.
Even if you follow owner's manual and do a 1st oil change at 10K kms, this engine will run beyond 200K kms without breaking a sweat.
Another suggestion is to change the transmission oil for the first time at 10K kms and thereafter at 20K kms or whatever the manual recommends. lol:
Its your personal choice. Early oil change is not going to hurt anything except the environment and a lighter wallet.

You can go ahead and pickup that oil if it meets the specification and grade for the cars that you are planning to use.
If the can is sealed and stored in a cool/dark place then the oil can be stored for upto 5years. Once the seal is broken, try to use the oil within one year.:)

Engine Oil has shelf life of 3 years if stored in cool dry place.

What is the brand of OEM chevy oil? If it is shell or Indian oil or castrol then you can get it at 30-40% off on the CASS price outside. As such the service centers overprice oils sometimes even over MRP if they are filling from huge barrel. So if you are getting the oil @ 20-30% discount then it will be the same price as what you would get outside

The date is the manufacturing date. These are 5 ltrs sealed cans. They meet the specs required. I'm going to go ahead. I've talked to the garage I visit and we're going to pick up 8 cans. Apparently it's a good oil and popular at his garage. I'll keep 3 and the rest go to my mechanic :)

There are two kinds available. MAK for chevrolet and Valvoline for mahindra (maximile).I'm planning to go ahead with MAK.

Avoid MAK if you are planning to use this oil in a petrol engine, Valvoline is much better for diesel engines.

Also pleasantly surprised to see that the 2L engine takes in only 4.5 lts of oil . Compared to our i20 diesel which wants 5.3 lts for a 1.4L engine. Wonder why!

Indeed surprising it is. I think it is the Hyundai which has this kind of an oil appetite, the 1.3 Multijet takes around 3.5 ltr and our 1.4 crdi gets 5.3 ltr. That is a good difference of 1.8 ltrs for a 100 cc difference. Apperantly it is the Hyundai having a large tummy :D

My Quadrajet engine which is the same as the Multijet one has a capacity of 3.2 ltr and not 3.5.

1.3 Multijet needs only 3.1 Liter with oil filter change. Though it can take more, MUL advice's to stick to 3.1 to avoid turbo seal failure.
