Hi all. My friend gave his figo D zxi for service @ 10k km. He requested the ford S.A to fill synthetic oil and they filled in with mobile 1 5w50. Its grade is CF and i am sure figo D has a requirement higher than that. The S.A said that is a a good oil for figo and convinced my friend to fill that oil. I understand that mobile 1 5w50 (meeting CF) is not the correct one. What do you all think..

Definitely, it is a petrol oil with some compatibility with Diesel, which is misleading since CF is very basic and used mainly on old diesel vehicles. This is the same scam that many dealers try to pull on you, when you ask for Delvac and they dont have it, they try to pass on synthetic oil designed for Petrol cars and push the idea that being synthetic its superior to any diesel mineral oil and compatible with anything.

The sad story is that, even I run my swift vdi abs on shell helix ultra (meeting CF). I changed to it at 10k km. Have done around 4k km now since the oil changed. I thought of changing it on 15k km on thinking of using it for 5k km and then change to mobil delvac 1 at 15k km on odo. But changed my mind to go for mobil delvac MX at 15k km and then use it till odo reads 20k and then change to mobil delvac 1 at 20k service so that i can change oil at every 10k km along with the regular 10k km period service. If anyone think that i can do anything else in my plan, please suggest..

I am not an expert, but I think that is a good plan. Delvac MX is an excellent oil in its own right and more suited for your engine than Helix Ultra anyway. Change it at 15k or ASAP, and change to Delvac 1 at 20k, that way you get the best value for money.

@anandpadhye : My Tucson is due for service and i am planning to give it for service this weekend and also move to synthetic oil. Should i go for Delvac 1 now or would you suggest that i wait till the time you are fully convinced of the same.

@chncar : yesterday we checked in my friend's figo D. The manual has the requirement as cd/ce/cf4. On this case i guess mobil 1 5w50 which meets CF should be ok right?

Logically thinking, this can not be correct. A common rail motor should need a minimum of CH4 oil for the engine to remain in perfect health. CD/CE are obsolete, CF4 is in use but only for older, non common rail engines. I am not saying you are wrong, but probably this is from the manual which can be wrong or not updated for a long time. Other members, please correct if I am wrong.

I would again mention, those who want to use synthetic in their diesel engines, please stay away from Petrol specific synthetic oils as they do not offer synthetic like protection to a diesel engine. Instead of spending on them, please use good diesel specific mineral oil like Delvac MX and change earlier than 10k km's. If you want synthetic only, please invest in Delvac 1. In my opinion, considering the oils available in India, anything else is NOT worth it.

EDIT: Also, please don't go by SA's and service centre's recommendation of the petrol specific synthetics in a diesel engine. They sell it to you at MRP and make a good amount of money by doing so. The oil does not do you what you expect it to, in a diesel engine.

^^^ I had similar doubts, in the first service of Figo, the a.s.s. Used Shell Helix HX7 AF 5W30 rated as API-SG. On asking for details, they just said that it's as per company specifications and recommend by FORD.

I have serious doubt regarding their claims and will switch to Delvac after second service, using the oil from the a.s.s. as a drain oil to wash old oil out.

Edit: forgot to mention than my Figo is a TDCi, hence the question of a.s.s. using petrol specific oil

Even i have noticed the same with Hyundai service center too. They put the same synthetic oil for both petrol and diesel.shell helix.when asked they replied its grade is 5x40 and hence it can be put.they are totally ignorant about api specification.

I don't think so. That is a Petrol oil with basic Diesel compatibility too. A good mineral oil like Delvac MX which is designed for Diesel engines would be better than putting a synthetic petrol oil, if you are unable to get Delvac 1.

Google for different engine grades and compare the specs, also contact Ford to get the info if you feel there is a mistake in the manual.

The manual only says that 1.4L TDCi engine needs to use 5W-30 oil meeting their WSS-M2C913-B specifications. Online search tells me that the following ols meets this:
Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 A1
Shell Helix HX7 AF 5w-30 API-SG
Caltex HavolineŽ Energy 5w30
Motul SPECIFIC 913C 5W-30

All these oils are specific for petrol engines and have no API-C specifications and only have API-S ratings. They are recommended for light diesel engines as well. I still have my doubts regarding using a non API-C rated oil in a diesel engine. I have written to Ford regarding this, lets see what we get. Bhagat Ford, Chandigarh use Shell Helix HX7 AF 5w-30 API-SG for Figo TDCi.

The 5W-30 is an SAE value showing the viscosity of the oil and basically indicates the temperature range it is designed to be used in. While it needs to match with what the manual says, other parameters like the ACEA/API grades are important.

BTW, you dont have to match exactly to 5W-30. 5W-30 is just a range and so other oils for example 5W-50 or 0W-40 that include that range are ok, to use, in fact you could say their specs are superior.

Yes, You are right. Last time I changed my engine oil, the oil level was well above the max level on the measuring stick. When I pointed out this, the service guy said it is not a problem. I had to change my voice to get it corrected. These guys are not taught the basic theory of maintenance by the companies.

This is one of the two Diesel-specific synthetic engine oil that is API-CH4 or higher - a requirement for my car (this oil is CI+, while there is a ESP version internationally that is CJ+). Though it is marketed as a commercial vehicle oil (Even Delvac MX is marketed as one), this is what the Mobil site has to say:

The other Diesel-specific synthetic oil I came across was one from OWS - but I have not heard good things about it yet.

I have been using the OWS 10W40 for the past year or so for my Pajero and am happy with it.

Cheers

I believe that 5W-40 won't be appropriate for a car with 5W-30 specified in the manual as it will be a little thicker/denser/more viscous and will affect mileage negatively though might be reducing wear and tear marginally. There won't be a point in manufacturing 5W-30 if 0W-50 will work for most cases (except cost perhaps). it may just be a point of performing a balancing act between engine life and engine performance and engine fuel efficiency. Just my thoughts.
