BHPian ![]() | 1 / 2 / 3 / 4, No! It's the Audi A4 2.0 TDI As they say, better late than never! I finally start to write my initial ownership thread, although if i go down the memory lane, i never thought of writing how i bought a car or how i felt after i ran it for a while until i came across this wonderful forum and the series of events that happened this time around during the purchase. Dear friends, My endeavor is to write an honest review about how I chose the Audi over the many many cars that I saw and my experience, discounts with each dealership. Please note I have nothing against any dealer / brand in specific and the views are strictly my own personal experience with them. Incase you happen to be an owner of a vehicle I have criticized, please don’t feel offended as my view is more of a comparison with another product while from a standalone perspective it may be subject to change. It all began in 2010, when i realized my SX4 has completed 3+ years and may be i should look out for a new car now, so one Sunday morning i step out to the Honda showroom (pretty basic: some research through internet conducted prior to the weekend) and ask for a TD of the Civic. The SA takes me around for a really short spin and comes back to provide basic details of the car's cost. I then Leave for Toyota, here i try out the Altis followed by a similar process and out to Chevrolet to check out Cruze followed by Skoda for Laura. After i come back home, i call the Honda guy again and ask him to send the TD vehicle to show it to my wife which happens but only after a week. I show her the Cruze then, followed by Skoda and she gives her final OK to the Honda Civic AT with SR. Toyota Altis was out the minute i saw the car from inside and learnt the three unique features the car boasted of (Power steering, Power windows & Toyota engine as quoted by the SA). Laura did not have a Sunroof in the top end L n K while the RS which had the SR did not have an AT gearbox, so it was out. Later called and tried almost everywhere and got to see the Kizashi just once at the thane wagle estate dealer. It’s funny but true that every Maruti dealer is just NOT so interested in selling the Kizashi, they even go to the extent of saying, “Who will buy a 20+ Lac Maruti car?” Later started to think, however couldn’t really decide if Civic was the right choice as the car has been there for a while now and didn’t really feel new as I’ve seen it everywhere with almost everyone so wasn’t really too sure. Thought for a while and dropped the idea for a while and got busy as my wife was expecting and I must say we both became really busy after the arrival of my son, Ayaan in October 2010. As time passed by somehow somewhere at the back of my mind was the new car buying decision which I put on the back burner only because I didn’t really feel the options available were worth and believed something better might just come up as I had heard from a few friends that over 40 new cars are expected between Diwali of 2011 and 2012. We were not in 2011 and my car had completed 4 years too so decided to move out in the market again and check what’s new? To my luck this time around I was introduced to T-BHP by a friend and hence my research, news / updates on cars were extremely thorough. Went to see the following cars and listed below is my summarized experience: 1. Honda Civic: I went to see the Accord this time around, however the SA insisted that the civic was a better car and the Accord was dated in terms of interiors and features. I agreed and looked back at the civic, but couldn’t really find anything much that was new. Also got my SX4 evaluated for exchange and the evaluator really pissed me off! He not just mentioned SX4 was a mistake Maruti made and the model was changed to a VVT in 2010 so my car shouldn’t get good resale as there was an engine upgrade in 2010 by Maruti. I just asked one question and the answer I got cleared my doubt on why the guy was rude. I asked were you working with Maruti last? He replied, yes! I still kept this was my final choice as I wasn’t sure if there were better cars yet with other manufacturers? (Obviously I did give him and the sales rep a piece of my mind before I left Honda in thane Wagle estate). Discounts: Honda doesn’t believe in giving discounts, we instead price our products correctly and honestly. 2. Toyota Fortuner: Went to see the Fortuner based on the recommendation of a lot of friends who believed I should only buy a SUV as I’m 6.2 and sedans won’t suit me! Tried to sit in the so called SUV and came out and straight out of the showroom too: P. Toyota needs to really re-think what they’re making and where the market is now? Sometimes we have to start offering over the basics even though we may have a great engine to sell the car. Personally I’m not really a Fan of SUV’s as I feel most people buy SUV’s to store luggage and drive with more than 5 people on road instead of actually using it like a SUV for off-roading. Some also buy it to just show off and there are very few who I really see go off road, besides we can always rent a car to off road so why buy it to drive on the road 90% time to commute in the city and make your life miserable? Discounts: Are you serious? Where from do you expect them, the car is completely stripped down! 3. Chevrolet Cruze: They were also still selling the same Cruze with all black leather seats this time with very little space and cheap plastics all around. I still asked for a TD as I had heard that the car is great and interiors can be changed to your taste aftermarket. Quite frankly, there was a noticeable lag in the pickup and I didn’t really enjoy driving the car as much, besides I felt it was a little too cramped too for me like my left leg would constantly touch the ac fan knob and increase / decrease the fan speed. Didn’t bother asking much and left as I was completely putt off with everything including the dirty TD car we were given which was not serviced for ages I guess! Discounts: 20000 4. Maruti Kizashi: Nothing much to say here as I only got to see the car on the web this time, looks like no Maruti dealer thinks it’s worth keeping the car for TD or in the showroom as it sells only 1 or 2 pieces in a year as a CBU. Even tried filling the TD request form on the website several times, however got no calls from Maruti. The dealer however was ready to give a 1.5 lacs discount on the car. 5. Ford Endeavor: Yes, there were still some people left in my life who wanted me to see the endeavor because? Of course, it’s an SUV! Saw the car, looked nice but didn’t feel comfortable sitting on the driver’s seat (I guess it was the under thigh support that was missing despite it being the size of an elephant). Discounts: We can discuss if you have got your Cheque book along! I smiled and left. 6. Skoda Superb: Went to the showroom at Prabhadevi (Autobahn) and was disgusted the moment we entered. Had this really funny incidence where the SA is constantly looking at us and I started explaining him the car and the features, to a point where when I saw that he’s now not getting the hint, I had to tell him if he likes the car I’m ok to take a cheque and his job too! Finally he called someone else who came and spoke a bit (These guys really need PRODUCT TRAINING) IMHO. It’s like a giving your business to a monkey and then firing the CA at the yearend for less profits. Anyways went down to JMD Thane with my wife this time and asked for a TD vehicle as the previous showroom didn’t have a TD vehicle also. We took the 1.8 TSI and moved toward eastern expressway for a TD cruising at 120 kmph in the S mode, just then the driver who was sent along with us (The SA was not available that day) asked us to take a U turn from ahead and return to the showroom as the supposed short test drive was over. I thought I should put the car back in the D mode before taking the U turn which was still a little ahead and just when I do that the lousy gear knob shifts directly a step above the D mode to N and the car comes to a complete Halt! With a small 1 year old toddler and my wife we almost lost our breath for 10 seconds, but came back to senses quickly as we were on a highway and luckily there were no vehicles behind us that time. Phew, finally put the gear in D mode and drove back slowly to the showroom. Upon enquiry, I got to know that the TD vehicle was not serviced for a while and had been giving these issues off late ![]() The SA called to say they’ve sent it for servicing and he wanted me to drive the diesel now, which I was extremely reluctant too considering my near to death experience. On several calls and insistence I decided to check the diesel which he said he will personally drive down with to my house (It’s 10 minutes from his showroom) and we can also discuss the financial there itself. He also mentioned that the 1 Lac discount Prabhadevi dealer is giving is low and he can better that. I finally get to see another driver coming with the car to my house with the SA anywhere in sight; since I was waiting for this I forget it for now and move on with the TD. This car was perfect and I didn’t face any of those issues here with the gearbox. The space inside the cabin is Huge and cannot be compared to anything but a sofa. Wife loved it too and I thought maybe this is a slightly costlier option, however a better upgrade? Called the SA, told him I like the car and since he didn’t come I wanted to know the financials and his final offer? His reply this time was as if he won some battle and proved a point that the diesel car was better than the petrol TD vehicle. He said offer remains unchanged from what you got from the other dealer. I reminded him of his statement that he made earlier, but I guess he was totally not interested so i hung up and moved on. Skoda horror stories were back and fresh in my mind and I don’t disagree with them at all. Good i didn't take this car (Read Harish's experience on TBHP) 7. Honda Civic Again: Went to the Andheri west, powai, prabhadevi dealer, but I guess they none were interested in selling the car. I was a little frustrated as I wasn’t able to make up my mind and hence I had gone with a cheque book to close on the civic, but no one really discussed the exact pricing and what offer they could give. All said we will call you tomorrow out of which only one did but they didn’t have a color of my choice and the offer Honda was running was now over. So no Car infotainment system with GPS inbuilt free now, instead pay 52k extra! 8. Nissan Teana: Was returning from a flight a few months back and saw this ad that said Nissan Teana with Panaromic Sunroof now at 18Lacs. Called the Nissan dealer at Prabhadevi and Navi Mumbai and went on to take a TD with a friend. The Panaromic sunroof for which I actually wanted to see the car apart from everything else was complete BS. It didn’t even open half as much as the normal sunroof’s open! Upon asking the SA, he said it’s for kids safety as if it would open more the kid may be able to climb out through the roof. I couldn’t help but laugh, however thought of concentrating on the TD which was boring. He took us in lanes which didn’t allow us to speed much but nevertheless the car was too boring to drive anyhow with cheap looking plastics all around and an orange color speedometer in the dash. Discounts: 3 Lacs 9. Merc C Class: Stepped in with a friend and straight in to check out the AMG Roadster only to be reminded by the receptionist who came over to ask which car were we looking for so an appropriate sales rep could be sent over for assistance. We were immediately greeted by a young girl who walked over from inside to show us the C class and I must admit, she knew everything about the car! From the engine to the features to every little thing that existed. We spent a good 2.5 hours there where she took us for a test drive in a car of our choice which was standing inside their showroom. During the test drive she continued to explain each feature on every instance that would come up on the road where the feature would be useful. She took us for a good drive where she included a good highway run along with a run over potholed roads to test the suspension / comfort of the car. There was nothing on earth that could stop me from buying that car only because of the amazing experience the sales person gave us with such a well-planned demo of the car. Apart from the fact that I didn’t fit inside with even little comfort, set aside the dated design and typical looking interiors or those cheap looking LED fog lamps. Discounts: 4 lacs plus goodies like petro card and extended warranty, maintenance plan. Further negotiable if booking was to be made immediately with a mere 5k as booking amount! 10. VW Passat: Had two VW dealers contact and meet me on the same day with just one phone call made from my end. Decided to do a TD from the nearby dealer and I must say, they were FAST! I told them I was by now looking at the Audi A4 and the guys were quick to react to that. Within 2 hours of the TD I had the sales head call me to speak about the final offer which was certainly great. My reason for not buying the Passat was only the lag during pick up and looks when compared to the Audi were little more subtle. It also made a lot more noise outside being a diesel and didn’t sound nice for a 30 lac price tag car. Discount: 1.5 Lacs + Vkool Diamond range on all 6 glasses that too for a 2012 manufactured fresh new car! 11. BMW 3 Series: Saw the car over the net to understand all features, somehow the dealer could never arrange a TD vehicle to be sent over as it would have gone out the same day. Nevertheless, I still liked the car and wanted it so started to directly discuss financial which if would work out I could always go down to the showroom for a TD myself, however destiny had something else in store. While the BMW dealer was as quick as the MB people when it came to financials, he had a very weird condition which I didn’t agree to accept and hence the deal didn’t work out. Discount: After an initial small conversation, the guy asks me to hang up and calls me from a cell phone and directly tells me ask for 4-5 lacs and I’ll get it done, however somehow he wanted me to make a 50% down payment and take remaining as loan which I didn’t quite understand? If I was making a 50% DP, I rather make 100%, however I was looking at a more conventional purchase with the regular % loan and DP option. Somehow with the discount he wasn’t ready to budge on that condition. Tried contacting Infinity through the web but the portal would always give an error so, somehow I never ended up test driving a BMW. Finally people around me thought I had lost it to upgrade directly to a BMW / MB / Audi from my humble SX4. Personally I didn’t know if it was the right choice or not, but I really wanted a good vehicle which I like and not what the world thinks is a more logical buy! Everyone i almost knew had a common opinion though that if you're stepping in the the world of luxury cars the MB or BMW it has to be! Quite frankly i agree with them as they're talking about it from a customer service / pre-sales / after sales experiences the former part of which i can validate is absolutely true. Nothing can match MB Customer service. P.S. I've TD'd the Audi before the C Class, BMW, Passat, Nissan & Skoda Audi A4: Jan 15th we set out to the Audi showroom at Andheri west. I was accompanied by my wife and little one as I had already discussed the car far too much at home and by now everyone around was convinced that I was serious about upgrading this time. Reached the Audi showroom in the afternoon around 3.30 – 4 and the look on the security guards face was worth capturing while we got out of the SX4. We were greeted by a lady who then introduced us to a Sales rep (Product Manager). He asked us about which car we wanted to see and we mentioned the A4 / A6. He took us to the car and started to explain some basic details about both which was later followed by a TD of both cars and a final discussion of the pricing of each. There was a lot of confusion around what they were offering as quite a lot of features he explained to us on day one were all only available in the Quattro and hence the rest of the versions didn’t have them. I asked him about the face lifted A4 that was due for launch in May, however he insisted that it’s October and not before that. We enquired about the discounts / offers and they came back with their standard discount that offered, upon further probing he mentioned that he needs to speak to his manager and shall get back to me the next week if something better can be done. He got back to me next week and mentioned the offer he could give. Upon further probing he mentioned, if we can get on a face to face discussion with his manager the deal can be closed (Gave some indicative max figures). I responded saying i wanted to discuss this over the phone and then take a call, however when the telecon with his manager happened he mentioned a figure lesser than what the sales rep indicated initially as max possible if we seal the deal face to face. Didn't bother much and asked him for sometime to come back with my decision. After a few days called him and told him i didn't like the offer much as what he initially mentioned as possible was not what his manager confirmed. Almost a month later, we interacted again over the A3 New A4 & Q3 launch date that i enquired post which he again asked me if i was positive to move with the current A4? My response was standard, you better the offer and we have a deal here! He stated that he will check with his manager and come back which took a week or so and he confirmed that the offer can modified slightly. Now this continued to and fro for a month till they finally gave the deal i was looking for, however till then almost 2 months had passed by and too many people had spoken to me about PETROL cars thereby my mind had changed completely. I told him, appreciate your offer and asked if the same could be given on the diesel as the Petrol car he was offering didn't have the WCI option. We again discussed far too much and finally ended up cancelling the deal as they couldn't match the offer nor get a WCI car for me in Petrol. As days passed by, i started to make up my mind to wait for another launch / get BMW 5 or MB E as i wouldn't fit in their A4 equivalents comfortably. Suddenly one fine morning i notice a few missed calls from the Audi dealership and their Sr. Manager's call too so i call them up in the evening to understand the reason for a call and receive an offer close to the petrol one initially. Since too much had already happened and he gave only 24 hours to decide, i ask him to proceed with the formalities and ask for my initial choice the Red car with black interiors. I immediately get a reply stating that it's sold off ( ![]() Finally the long story comes to an end as we then select white with tan interiors and WCI with S-line included that looks awesome IMO. My deliver experience can be read using this link: http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/editpo...postid=2788946 , so wouldn't get into those details here. How many Kms has the car been driven? I've already completed over 3000kms with a trip to Goa and i must say the car does absolute wonders on road! Usual driving pattern: I usually commute from home to office and back which is hardly 10 - 15 km a day. Weekend drives could be anywhere between 50 - 100 km, however somehow i've crossed this benchmark after buying this car, so i will keep the group updated on my new driving pattern, unless this gradually reduces. The Good: 1. Tan Interiors 2. Rich & Neat Materials used in interiors 3. Those awesome LED's (You fall in love again) 4. An amazing Red light used across the car behind each button, AC vent knobs etc. It's the best i've seen (almost looks like a cockpit according to one of my friend), especially much much better than yellow which we usually see 5. Interior space best amongst the BMW 3 and Mercedes C class 6. Fuel Effeciency: Overall 15 - 16 so far with mostly city and some expressway / palmbeach drives. 7. Great Boot Space 8. handling at high speeds 9. Auto hold feature, especially in bumber to bumper traffic this is surely a boon 10. Rear sunblinds (Auto & Manual), come in very handy in Mumbai summers 11. Coming home and leaving home lights 12. ambient lights inside the cabin are great and bright. 13. Cool glove box with light 14. Two 12v charging sockets along with a third one for lighter and a seperate ash tray. 15. 60:40 foldable rear seats that convert the already huge boot into a monster 17. Electrically adjustable seats, mirrors with lumber jack support for driver & front passenger along with memory system for driver. 18. Pirreli's 17 inchers are surely not as rough to ride and the suspension setup supports it remarkably. 19. Auto dimming and heating function on the rear view mirrors is very useful 20. All windows and sunroof / boot can be opened with the key fob if you just keep the open button pressed and close to shut them all at once. Good feature if you want to remove the hot air from your car when it's parked in open during afternoons. 21. S- Line kit which gives the car a cool look 22. Front & Rear sensors and MID display which is very helpful in tricky situations. 23. Hangers in the boot for small shopping bags and a cool net to keep tight the items that may roll all around the boot while driving. Really love this one. 24. Hangers for my suit near the rear passanger window. 25. Warning lights on all doors 26. Rear seat center arm rest with cup holders that slide out. 27. A knob in the toolkit to open the nuts on the tyres, without this you can't open them (Anti theft funda) 28. The Bad: 1. Low seating (Face trouble with these cars after driving the SX4). Difficult to sit and even more to get up even after adjusting the seat. If i adjusst it higher, it also moves ahead which results in my knees touching the steering and dash. 2. Side Rear view mirrors are a tad too small, but may i'll get mroe used to it. 3. Needs paddle shifters, though it has a manual mode where we can use the gear stick, however paddle shifters are just too cool & easy to operate. (Passat has this too) 4. CVT Gearbox, not like i'm complaining as even the new facelifted version doesn't have DSG, but it's really funny that the passat does! 5. When you start the car next day and use the reverse gear there is a lot of acceleration that is required to move it which i have never experience even in a santro Xing (May be diesel engine is the cause) 6. While i don't know where in the india will i use it but since other cars in the same range or even lower like VW and Skoda's have it, i feel a premium brand should definitely have more power! 7. First week itself the washer on the right hand side had to be filed as it wouldn't slip back in after being used. Thankfully the dealership sent someone over at my place to have this done. This happened again yesterday, so will need to get it checked. This may be a one off, but questions the build quality? 8. Dont' know why but the TPM system doesn't show up anywhere in the MID no matter what. Someone told me i need to get it calibrated once at the workshop to have it start showing up and work. 9. Some noise (May be engine) can be heard during acceleration (May be my listening skills are really sharp considering my job). Never knew what this means as all my other cars were petrol. 10. Blue effecieny is given in the passat and not in an AUDI? 11. While the key fob is pretty cool and is inserted in a slot which when pressed acts as a start stop button, but still no Keyless entry. 12. No massager option for the drivers seat like passat (really wonder why) 13. No Rear view camera (Again present on the passat). 14. Alloy wheels could have been a lot better atleast with the WCI (Like BMW Alloy's, they are jsut awesome). These almost look like they are grown from the Vento. 15. Maintainance package like they have come up with for the New A4, not sure if we can avail it too since the car is pretty new. 16. Still don't know why cars in india don't get GPS! Was initially told it will be active after 6 months or so after their tie up with India maps or someone, however later found out that only the CBU's have the hardware to have that installed even if it happens and not the CKD's. Some pictures of the car and more pictures including interiors coming up after i get sometime to click some neat ones. Thank you for taking the time out to read this long story, drive safe. Cheers! | Re: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4, No! It's the Audi A4 2.0 TDI Pheww!! Great write up and an awesome upgrade too, from SX4 to Audi. I must say all of your views regarding all the cars, which you considered in the buying process are same as mine ![]() Great choice with the A4, given a chance- I'll pick A4 any day, between 3 and C class, where C class is more plane dull and comfort oriented and 3 series more performance oriented, with harsh ride, A4 is best of both worlds, comfort with good driving performance ( wish they replace CVT and add some more horses to the car ). Do post some interior pics along with some good exterior shots. Wish you a trouble free ownership with her, drive safe. Cheers ![]() Sameer Last edited by sameerg001 : 30th May 2012 at 22:41. |

![]() Some more Features i missed so adding them now: 1. Park assist, this is basically a display in the MID with sensors in the front and rear controlled with a button to activate or when you engage the reverse gear. Boon to park in tight situations or when you want to check if some vehicle is up too close during heave traffic. 2. Xenon Lamps with washers, Day time LED's make you fall in love again 3. Lights can be set to Automatic mode (This uses Light sensors), where based on the lightning conditions it will use high / low beam / switch off / on the lights. 4. Rain sensing wipers and the sentivity can be adjusted for these 5. Cruise Control 6. Defogger on rear windscreen and exterior electronicaly foldable rear view mirrors. There is a button on the dash that can also remove fog on the front windscreen. 7. Driver doesn't need to look at the MID and get distracted, he can view and control everything from the steering and veiw it on the driver information system right in the front. Everything from: Speed
9. Steering mounted controls for music, volume and to answer a call. The same volume and mode buttons can be used either by scrolling or pressed to select an option. 10. Bluetooth to connect your phone. The phonebook of your phone syncs automatically once connected. 11. 6 CD changer - Audi Symphony music system with radio with 8 speakers / tweaters and mini amp. (Dont remember the exact bifurcation of the 8) 12. SD Card reader 13. Preparation for ipod / iphone connector (There are two cables that are available as accessories which i purchased from Audi). These can be used to connect your iphone / ipod and the other one is a USB Connector for pen drives etc. 14. Three zone climatronic AC with vents are the rear with a digital clock. Different tempratures can be set for both passangers in the front while the one's at the back can increase / decrease the air flow and even switch to hot air even though the front two are on the cool mode. 15. Moonroof 16. Rear seat entertainment preparation. Incase you wish to install tablets / lcd for rear seat passangers. 17. Valet parking extra fob. Can be given to a valet to use for parking your car without having to give him the original key. This is located in the compartment on the front dashboard. 18. Three way adjustable Arm rest for the driver and co-passenger with a small storage space below and two (One Big / One small) cup holders. there's also a space besides that to keep your wallet / cell phone etc. 19. The Storage space on all doors have a special provision to hold 1 / 1.5 litre bottles apart from the extra stuff you may wanna keep there which comes very handy. 20. Leather covered multifunction steering wheel, 3 spoke - tilt & adjustable 21. Milano Leather Seats 22. 8 Air bags 23. Anti theft alarm 24. First Aid kit with warning triangle and basic tool kit with a space saver 19 inch tyre (Wonder why 19 inch here, but surely better than the BMW with no tyre) 25. 15000 km oil change only and first service at 30000 km, there is a reminder for this as well. I know i may be repeating, however one does need to personally experience the Red lights all around in the interiors instead of any other color to understand how cool it looks vs. any other colors we see. I simply LOVE this! Last edited by Karan1981 : 31st May 2012 at 00:35. | |||

I like the A4 a great deal, having just experienced a couple of them on my holidays - (a normal sedan and a wagon variant - both of the higher spec variants with dual zone climate control and cruise control and all that jazz). I also find these cars to be a bit painful to get in and out of as Im the same height as you are. But once you're in, its fantastic. The handling and overall feel is really very nice indeed. Good car, good choice. A zillion times better and more elegant that the C Class Merc and the BMW 3 series, both of which are as common as dirt anyway! May your lovely white A4 give you much pleasure! Cheers! |

Thanks Buddy, no mods for now as i've taken the extended warranty but i'm not sure if i'll be able to resist that much ![]() Surely wanted to change the Alloys and increase the power for starters, but lets see how it goes. It may sound stupid, but i really want give the car a brilliant Red paint (The Audi one ofcourse) Not sure if this is advisable or possible and what issues it brings along? Quote:

| Re: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4, No! It's the Audi A4 2.0 TDI A very good review Karan! Your love for the machine, is evident in the way you've penned down your thoughts about the car. I for one, didn't know the A4 came with SO many features as you've listed down. I'm sure there's a lot of feel good factor whenever you use them ![]() Congrats on the car and wish you many safe journeys in it ! EDIT: Can you post a pic of the interiors at night ? |
