Re: A pre-worshipped VW Jetta joins the family

Congratulations!!! @Redline6800, This is exactly the advantage of this beloved forum. You know the car in and out, as if you had been with her all along.
@Chetan Sir, The Jetta absolutely fits the phrase "Pre-loved". Hats off to you!!!

Yeah! the Jetta is built tough and also at a time when VW was at the top of their game.

Thing is, also you will now have many Jetta owners who want to sell as their cars approach the 5-6 year mark.

I feel if looked after well and serviced regularly, a used Jetta will serve its new owner well for at-least 5-8 more years.

Here is the original Jetta Brochure that Chetan gave me!

Congratulations on your beautiful new car. The Jetta is one of my favourite cars. I have bought two used Jettas and both were totally trouble free and super reliable in addition to being fun to drive. Currently the used Jetta and Civics are the best value for money cars in India.

Re: A pre-worshipped VW Jetta joins the family

Congratulations once again Atul! Wish you a many many happy years of ownership!

Tastefully written review! Loved reading every bit of it!

Needless to say, I will be glued to this thread! Please update as and when you get time.

By the way, water pump was replaced at around 80K on the ODO. Timing belt will need replacement during the next service.

Well. This car is seriously underrated. I live in Mexico and here, this car is like the Alto of India. People here love it for its comfort, reliability and overall luxury for the price. A very good choice. In fact, I have plans to search for a used Jetta when I head back to India.

Thanks Chetan! will make sure I get this done at next service.
I am already clocking about 500 km a month as compared to the 30km a month, I was doing before I got Jetta!

Congratulations @Redline6800, I'm sure the German Engineering and thought that has been put in the Jetta will bring a smile on your face everytime you get into it.
Are you planning any mods in the near future? As the mechanicals are all sorted, I would suggest some aesthetic changes.
A black lip spoiler should look great on the car.

Thanks @burjiis would be interested to know the following:

1. have you changed any parts during your ownership?
2. what are the service costs like?
3. any tips on keeping the car healthy as the years and km climb upwards?
4. Anything to watch out for?

Cheers!

Thanks man! no changes planned for the first year atleast - just want to get to understand and use Jetta properly and keep her in top shape.

Re: A pre-worshipped VW Jetta joins the family

Congratulations Atul on the new acquisition! Wish you a million grinning miles with the White Stallion. One heck of a car you got there!

I was in the same boat few years ago when I got myself a very nicely maintained 2014 Jetta Hightline DSG. Everytime i drive her is an occasion from then on. Driven around 40k Kms already, I recently changed the factory installed tyres and Front Brake pads at 60k Kms. Keep this car pampered and it will return double of it.

PS: Are you sure the car came with 8 Airbags? Mine do not have Airbag tags on rear seats and I assume it does not have rear seat airbags. Though the manual says so.

PPS: There a whole lot of mod options available and also you can convert your Manual AC to Auto. Will try and dig out an old bookmark related to this else TBHP and Google are your best friends.

Hi Redline6800,

Yes, had to change quite a few parts over the past 4 years.
1. Discs - VW almost always had me replace the discs whenever the pads needed to be changed even when the pads had not been completely worn out and had life in them.
2. Door Locks - They gave way in 2 years. Even though my car was not under warranty, they gave me an extended warranty and replaced all door and boot lock.
3. Coolant leaked out from the Water Pump hence got that replaced along with the timing kit
4. Lower arms & Shock Absorbers - Changed at 56K & 80K respectively
5. Starting the car would make the entire engine shake - Flywheel, engine and gear mounts were replaced.
6. The roof lining came down. That had to be replaced. Talk about Global Warming.
6. At about 1.02 Lakh kms on the odo - my timing belt snapped while I was driving at about 100 kmph. That damaged the entire engine head. VW paid some part of the cost of a new engine head to reduce my burden. Cost me 1.3 Lakhs. VW paid 50K.

Suggestions and Observations :-

- In 4 years of ownership (97000 kms driven) I have spent about 5.33 Lakhs on mantaining the vehicle. This includes two sets of tire changes as well.
- If you get a remap done (I have an engine and a DSG remap), get your car serviced at every 10,000 Kms else 15K is fine. Cost of each Service is about 16K to 19K
- Strongly suggest that you change your timing belt and not wait for 1.2L kms.
- Take care of going over bad roads. The Jetta feels like an SUV over bad roads with hardly any bumps filtering in. However your mounts and suspension will get damaged prematurely in the process.
- Wipers- Get a 3M sand paper for the glass and scrub the glass occasionally with it especially in the area where the wiper rests. Removing the sediments stuck to the glass from that area will give you a longer wiper life. The driver side wiper is prone to damage faster as it cannot be lifted off the glass and cleaned easily.

Despite the costs that I have incurred (5.5 per Km), I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE CAR. The peace of mind she gives me when I am on road or gravel or lake (read that as Mumbai floods) is tremendous. She never fails to put a smile and still drives like she is just out of a showroom. I have 133K on the odo and she still has plans of taking me to Leh, the North East and Thailand in the years to come. I don't cringe on spending on her and in return she pays tribute and respect to my right foot when it matters. It is she who has me convinced that its the right foot thats connected to the heart.

Cheers!

I think in later models - the no of airbags was reduced to 6.

Will proceed with any upgrades/mods only after my first service - basically looking only at cosmetic upgrades if at all, as performance wise - I have no complaints at all.

There is a certain beauty and peace of mind one gets when the car is kept in stock condition - so may tinker with the missus's Brio instead

Recently while driving I realised the the Apple watch (or any smartwatch I guess) is a low cost upgrade as it displays messages and emails and you can just glance at your wrist.

Gulp!

When the time comes to change the brake pads at the next service, it will probably be best to get the rotors changed as well.

The service guys had mentioned the bush on the front RHS lower arm was weak - but you have to pick up a new lower arm itself and cannot get only the bush replaced (atleast at the service centre).

I will do the timing belt change at the next service - Jetta has been maintained at 12,000 km service intervals and I feel that would be sufficient with my usage.

I feel the Bilstein B6 shocks should last another 5 years - will be getting the tyres aligned every 5,000 km to keep the tyres in shape too.

Thank you for all the suggestions and advice, it is very highly appreciated. While i am very very familiar with my City, am a bit clueless about the Jetta's maintenance requirements at the moment.

Please do post a pic of your car as well.

Re: A pre-worshipped VW Jetta joins the family

Hey, congrats on the Jetta! Wish you many years of joyful ownership with your new acquisition. Nothing like buying a car from a bhp-ian where the ownership is documented from the very first km

Incidentally, I picked up a 2015 Jetta DSG a few days ago after over a year of scouting for good examples at the right price in the used car market. I loved the Jetta when I first drove it in 2012 and later reading through mod Ajmat's,Chethan and graaja's well documented ownership threads, it was hard to not be smitten.

I'm quite interested in procuring the below-mentioned items for my car too, hope you/Chethan can help with the source
  • Extra sporty pedal kit
  • set of locking wheel bolts with coded key, wheel locks and wheel lock dust caps
  • Touch up paint pens

Re: A pre-worshipped VW Jetta joins the family

Oh damn man. This looks so tempting. Saw a brilliant condition Highline Jetta manual at the VW showroom for sale, ran 45k with new tires and full service record. It only had the roof lining loose which they said they'll fix but other than that it was perfect but didn't take it for a ride though. Had initial plans for a used BMW but felt that is way riskier with the budget I have in hand and might as well think about something like the Jetta. Was pretty worried about the maintenance costs though considering the cars back home were virtually trouble free (have the same Honda City type 2 as you btw). Seeing this thread rekindled that interest once again!

Congratulations on the purchase!
I chanced upon your thread as I am beginning to look at options to replace my ageing Octavia, and the Jetta and the Polo GT TSI figure high on my priority list! I'm subscribing in the hope of seeing regular updates on your thread. Wish you many happy miles in the Jetta.

Hi, Hats off to you for still loving the car after those kind of repair bills!
Since I'm in the market for a used Jetta at the moment, what are the top things I need to watch out for during a test drive? I'm familiar with VWs and the DSG in general, but a little detail never hurt.

More km on Jetta.

There is a trip planned to Kotagiri on upcoming Fri-Sat and I an quite excited about the chance to do a road-trip with Jetta.

Also got a chance to take some pictures of the red backlighting on the switches at night.

Instrument panel, power mirror controls and doorpad switches
