Hi, I haven't experienced the 3rd row seating in the new Safari, but my guess is it cant get worse than the Alturas. The 3rd row in the Alturas is wide enough with reclining back but too low to sit. Getting in and out is very cumbersome.

Hi,
I am contemplating to upgrade to an Alturas. Have heard some stories from existing users regarding availability of its spares at Mahindra Service Centers. Would be helpful if you could tell in case you've faced any issues regarding service and availability of spares for our Alturas.

Your response would help in making a decision for me.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, In my 38000 kms of ownership, the only time I faced an issue with parts availability was with brake pads. They had to be changed at the 30000 kms service, but unfortunately they dint have it in stock. This was sometime during March 2021. I was assured it would be replaced in a weeks' time but finally got them replaced at 36000 kms. Covid induced lockdowns too played a role in the delay. So if you are buying the Alturas, get one set of brake pads and stepney in your negotiations.

Re: Ownership experience - My Mahindra Alturas G4

I recently had my 20K service at 19K and planned the service after calling GM and the service line in charge. Both have been a good help. GM advised me a couple of months back when I asked for a service at 16K only since the car didn't see many drives and wasn't serviced for 15 months. He said don't waste free service with km on the ODO. It would not pose any challenge.
Regarding service, I knew I had to keep them on toes with timely subtle motivation about the benchmark Toyota has set and Ford's good. The last service was six hours, but this time I got it back in three hours, with me being on overwatch.
I think these aren't considerations for generalising the service quotient, as it depends highly on the set of people you deal with. But just a heads up, that it can get better with the right persuasion.

Also, I got the brake pads with no fuss. Although, I wasn't expecting such a fast burn. Attached are pictures to show what 19K did. I was told few others had to change within 12-15K. Note that these drove in hills mostly, with mine having a 75:25 run of hills and planes.

Amazing price. Almost 12 lakhs lower than the Fortuner 4X4! Very tempting, must say. Which part of the country are you in that has such low registration rate?

But given that Mahindra has sold its stake in Ssangyong recently, the long term service support and part availability is suspect. It has also been a very slow selling product, so the 3rd party parts and service ecosystem may not have evolved too

Hill driving eats brake pads. Particularly for AT cars. To mitigate this start using engine braking to the maximum on down slopes.

Re: Ownership experience - My Mahindra Alturas G4

Whether it is wise to consider G4 4WD in this time when there is a rumor about the withdrawal of the brand? I'm really sold out to it though I didn't got a TD, having said that the pricing is challenging for me but ready to accept if I get assurance of ASS for at least coming 10 years.

Hey, any latest updates on your G4? How much km clocked? Service cost? I'm looking for a long term proper review of G4. Do you think it's worth buying it now? I'm planning to keep this for next 5-10yrs. Kindly advice.

Re: Ownership experience - My Mahindra Alturas G4

Hello @ NitinDev,
I have clocked close to 60k kms. I havent' paid a penny till now for service since its covered under AMC. Just last month I had to get the front windshield replaced(the car was parked next to a playground so I guess a ball or something hit it and there was crack), and it was done in 2 days time(luckily they had in stock at Anant Cars). No other issues yet. Still runs like a new car, no rattles whatsoever even after 60k kms/3 years except for some weird squeaky noise from the roof sometimes. It appears and then disappears. Still a mystery. Its a luxury highway cruiser. 90% of my drive in the Alturas is on the highways, so the tyres are still good. I could easily do another 25k kms with them. Battery has been in top notch condition when last checked at 50k service. The wiper motor had to be replaced sometime between 35-40k kms. It was done under AMC, but took some time for the part to arrive from S.Korea. Just last week I noticed an abnormal door gap on the front passenger door. It was very unusual. I sent it to the Service Centre and they corrected it in about an hour. I still wonder how it happened. Otherwise I am fully satisfied owner of the Alturas G4. I plan to keep it till 200,000 kms if parts and service are available.

If the Alturas is still available with the AMC and Buyback scheme, then I still think its worth buying it, unless you are not bothered if Mahindra stops selling it. My driver was told by the folks at Anant cars that the new model of the Alturas is being launched soon, though I am not sure about it.

Happy hunting.

Re: Ownership experience - My Mahindra Alturas G4

I checked with 2 dealers on the Alturas today. One said its out of production and can only sell what is in stock and other said we can still order it and it will be made after that (with limited colour options)

Both said TD is ruled out and its also impossible to even see the vehicle as its only made to order !

Now how do we take a plunge without even seeing it when OTR is 38L ?

A very good tragedy story (yet again after Marazzo) for Mahindra

Any advice for me to still take the leap of faith ?

Sireesh Bommanahalli. There is an exec called Jiju. He told me just last week when I asked him, that there is stock available and they will sell the Alturas if someone wants one. Suggest talk to him if you are keen.
Personally I think the Alturas is a really good vehicle. It was just poorly marketed by Mahindra.

thank you..Do you have his contact by any chance ? Also I am in touch with someone from Anant cars. The thought of not even looking at it and sinking 38L is scaring me !

Hi,

TBH this does not inspire confidence from the Dealers end. I would suggest visiting other options, or better, you can DM the thread owner as he happens to be from your city and get Sales contact.
Regarding the decision, I would still say if someone's getting AMC & Buyback deals (both of which I didn't take at that time), it still is a better VFM option than those eyeing Fortuner for 7-seat options. If running is not huge, say <30K per year, and the owner plans to retain it for a more extended period, I think it should work well, considering you can buy a whole new car of mid-segment with money saved from Fortuner.

Another thing you'll witness when you TD the vehicle is that most of the clever bits and ergonomics in the current-gen 700 & Scorpion are heavily inspired by Alturas and Mahindra's Ssangyong venture. From the stalks to dials to the smart seat welcome feature, which everyone loves, but never acknowledges its origin!
But despite those features available in two other options, the moment you enter the vehicle and have a first-hand experience is the moment you realise not two things that might look alike are the same. The quality, the heft, precision and clickety clank with which the interiors work, it's a different experience. It oozes premium and speaks volumes about the quality.
It doesn't ride as well or provide drivability as an Endeavour, but better than Fortuner. It doesn't give you a take-it-anywhere truck-like vibe of the Fortuner but will get you out of all tricky places with the 4L & those Hankook tyres while keeping you cosy in those Nappa leather seats.

This stretched answer is because it'll help you form a picture of pros and cons and ultimately dials down to your specific requirement; Also! because no one writes about it, unlike thousands of comments on the other popular options. Honestly, many people carrying and throwing an opinion haven't even had a decent experience with the car! I could ignore the pseudo journo tribe of youtube, but I felt it within our forum's admirable and enthusiastic crowd as well! I just hope and pray more people to share the genuine experience before lining up with candles and delivering condolence on the grave once it's gone. Better to share now, please!
