Done that, but this time we'll be on our own so yes it will be fun. Already on the list!

And that is the whole idea - mall crawling is okay for the first 6 months, but after that you've been to all the malls and found that every mall has the same stores. Weekends get really boring, and while taking the bike out is always an option the family cant join me on two wheels.

Noted. A GPS unit also came with the vehicle, so thats taken care of.

(I forget the name) They also refer to it as the fourth quarter or something like that (geez I am getting old forgetting all the names) You'd need to do this in a convoy of offroaders though as apparently its fool hardy to attempt this alone. The dunes are monstrosities there apparently
The EMPTY Quarter, not the fourth quarter. Been there once, its VERY beautiful but also very scary when you think of getting lost there. The chap who's doing the 'handholding' for me is a Liwa veteren.

@Iraghava,

Well said; here is one guy who get to have the best of both worlds!

@Steeriod,

May I remind you that you have got yourself a hell lot of work to do on hand! Long time outstanding promises!

Guess a 'Steeroid needs a Assistant' drive is needed, to get you someone to write all those adventure and also help you in the photography during your outings.

Ah! Thanks for the clarification. In the 90's when I was there I had once read of a foreign team that crossed it in a convoy. I never met anyone who had, including the locals I knew. Someday it would be fun to come there and do this.

PS Just remembered in Arabic they call this the Rub-Al-Khali

The Rub-al-khali or the Empty Quarter apparently is the world's largest sand desert with a size equivalent to the combined area of France Belgium and Holland.

I remember I first heard about this region through excerpts from the book Across the Empty Quarter by the famous Arabian world explorer Wilfred Thesiger

Here's a picture of this magnificent land

You asked me the same question twice, I owe you an answer:

4WD is permanent on the Defender (and on all LRs, if I'm not mistaken). The only option you have is to select High/Low/Neutral (neutral - no drive to ANY wheel) and lock differential.

What an acquisition, Santosh! You are really living life king-size.

So, how exactly did you ward off those 'indecent' proposals? With a firm NO, or a grin?
