congrats Iraghava on the purchase.

Would you be able to detail the problems that plauged the city that actually made you think of a change? Reason for asking this is that I run an OHC vtec in pune thats clocked close to a lac kms now and i believe yours has done close to 2. Would be interested to know the ageing issues of this particular car.

Thanks Dine! I did mention the tyres I intend to get in an earlier post.

PLEASE change the tyres fast, they are just not in sync with your tyre wali image !! LOL LOL
Thank you Ricky ji!! Thanks for all the help & yes, the tyres will be changed shortly.

I am glad you went for the getz crdi that too bagging a discount. Get the door handles painted in matching colour, also add a spoiler and get leather or art leather seats done, even get the side panels done, it will look great.
Hey Hemanth, thanks a ton! I do intend to get the interior done up along with the handles etc.

I am seeing the 1.1L badging for the first time. Looks like its a rip off from the Santro 1.1L above the side indicators.
Hey Srinath, well caught! The badging is indeed from the Santro!

Awesome choice. Wish we had bought the CRDi now :(
Yeah man, looking forward to the Neova's! Thanks for the wishes!

True that! Blame it on the recession. And I'll still say it, it still not as FTD as the OHC!

This Getz CRDi that you tried to masquerade as a petrol has one little brute of a powerplant sitting inside. I know it. Had to draw on all my driving experience and skill to keep this young lad at bay on NH8 while the Bull was screaming at 130+ and smoking from the rear.

KP was heard cruising at 150+ on Rajasthan roads very recently. Gives a decent mileage too. An outside box should boost it to 135BHP. My advice - do it only after 20K kms. The diesel will comfortably settle by then. If possible use Mobil Delvac MX or Delo 400 from day one. You'll be a happy diesel head.

More advice once you take this Brahmin to a watering hole... You better do that fast if you want the "1.1" to be blessed...
Thank you Guruji! And yes, the box etc. is planned only after 10k kms & I'm thinking of switching over to Delo 400, you got a source handy I suppose? And let's meet this weekend for relieveing our parched throats!

Congrats on the new ride, Ishan! Looks good. Will look better with some ICE.

Why on earth would you put a Santro and lower spec badge on the car? That part completely beats me.

Anyway, how's she drive? From the reviews I've heard, I assume it must be quite a zipper.

Update

So time for a small update, she's done just under 900kms by now & should be run in by tomorrow & then the real fun begins! I've been keeping her under 3000 rpm till now (save the odd incident or two!) and it's been a real challenge suppressing the urge to push on! Especially when you consider that she cruises at 100 kmph in 5th gear @2000 rpm & 150 kmph is just a flex of the right foot!

Over all FE has been around 13-14 kmpl till now & the driving experience is getting better. The suspension feels very well settled & she doesn't move around during simultaneous braking and turning manoeuvres like the i10 or the Santro. The rear suspension (actually both ends) is also much more settled and on bumpy roads does not bottom out or feel out of control. Taking curves at 100-110kmph even on the stock rubber is without any fuss or drama.

In fact, it's only when you look at the speedo that you realise the speed you just took the last curve at! But, it does feel a bit detached to drive after the OHC and as expected I do miss some of the steering feel of the OHC. On the plus side though, the suspension certainly feels better sorted and so the does the handling to an extent. I guess one reason for this could also be that my OHC had seen a lot of miles & the suspension probably wasn't in the best shape around the time I was selling her.

She should be through with the first service over the weekend and I don't have any extra work to be done from her except stopping the rear number plate rattling. And, filling diesel is certainly a happy moment as the dent in the wallet is less than half of what it used to be in the OHC! But convincing the pump attendants that this car also comes in a diesel guise is another story altogether! Most check with me at least 3-4 times before filling her up!

Lows: She did pick up her first battle scars though as a careless bunch of guys in a Accent CRDi banged into her from behind and damaged the bumper. Thankfully the speeds were really low at that time so no major damage has been done. The guys after that ran away like cowards & a couple of kilometres banged their car's right rear end into an oncoming tractor & managed to split the metal of the quarter panel into two pieces & also managed to brake their tail light. I was intent of chansing them down & managed to but upon seeing them driving in such suicidal style I hung back lest they do something worse to themselves or my car.

Then the next day while I was at the RTO office to complete the registeration formalities some low-life, good for nothing son of a so & so scratched my rear left door. Thankfully the scratch is not too deep & not very visible to others but is fairly long (about 12-14" or so). Why are people such wankers? I've never managed to figure that out.

Will update this thread as the mileage piles on!

P.S. I have to admit that the early morning clatter & the diesel stink are still a problem for me to accept! And cooling the turbo down after a hard run is another pain in the rear end! I think a Turbo Timer would be a good addition!

Thanks Ajay! And yes some ICE would be great, after all there is a limit to how much music a man can hear off an iPhone using the headphone!

And tum ICE-WICE waale nahin samjhoge yeh 1.1 ki kahaani!!

Thanks Mega!

As for the problems, well they were mostly related to the age of the rather then anything else. She was still giving me about 10-12 kmpl and ran nicely but small niggles had started cropping up every now & then and that had been irritating me. Also the fact that I had had the car for over 5 years played a part in this decision as I had become bored of drivig the same car over & over.

For example, the combination switch developed a problem & I could no longer switch to high beam and then the fuel guage stopped working. It was small niggles like these which caused me the most irritation. Most fundamentals though, gave me reliable, trouble free service till the end. In fact in my nearly 2 lakh kms of driving, I got stranded only once, when she broke her Timing Belt at 120k kms & that too only costed me 2k in repairs (1.2k belt + .8k bearing) as it was a non-interference engine!

As for the main things you should watch out for in a high-mileage OHC, they are:

1. Steering Rack Leakage/Failure
2. A/C Compressor Failure
3. Tie-Rod Ends premature failure
4. Weak Suspension (generally requires a rebuild around 80-100k kms mark)
5. Light Sheet Metal so easily picks up dents & dings.

Apart from that she's bloody reliable and also remember, none of these problems will leave you stranded so in that manner, she's very very reliable & trustworthy. I'd done hundreds of late night & odd time runs in her & she never let me down apart from that once incident which was also partly our mistake as we'd forgotten to replace the Timing Belt on schedule.

Also, part of the reason I was a little put off was that after market support for this model was virtually non-existent so sourcing better than OE quality parts was almost impossible unless you went for some crazily expensive parts.

If you do have any specific queries though, feel free to PM me.

BTW, why are you calling Gabbar a "she"? Sex change operation?

If you feel the steering in that Getz is detached, you should drive the NHC(as I'm sure you've done). That is absolutely pathetic. I'm glad I never drove an OHC or a really good car before I drove the NHC

And yeah, the NHC is ridiculous, there is no such thing as steering feel in it! But just for comparison sake, you should get a drive in a nice OHC, would redefine steering feel for you!

Hi! Ishan,
I don't have any idea how to figure out if the turbo is overheated. Is it done by monitoring the temperature gauge? I drive a Palio MJD. In my earlier M800 the sound of the radiator cooling fan when in operation was rather loud and I could wait till the fan stopped before shutting off. In the palio I don't have a clue when the fan works.

ok now I know that your real name is Ishaan.

So Ishaan Bhai, Congrats for your new car. Its a great car.. But even I guess getz in "white" would have been a better choice ( just a personal choice of color). White getz looks more cool with black tinted glass. Yours a nice color too. Newaz..Have fun and drive safe.

Waiting for the mods and more pics!!
