A Start vs K10 comparison- My impressions

After TDing both K10 Vxi and A Star Lxi (with 5 passengers), below are my impressions:
  1. Both A Star and K10 have very sluggish pick up taking off after slowing down for a steeper bump (in 2nd gear and AC on). Had to shift to 1st gear in both for accelerating. So Equal points here.
  2. A Star is built better (in terms of finish and plastics inside and in the general feel overall). One definitely feels better inside A Star.
  3. Couldn't feel much of a difference in geashift. Both are almost similar. So equal points again.
  4. Felt more rear seat space and comfort in A Star and confirmed the same by my parents also who were in rear seat throught both TDs. Advantage A Star.
  5. Front and side visibility is definitely better in K10. But shdnt matter for a safe and cautious driver. Advantage K10.
  6. Didnt do hard braking test on either so cant say anything about that but again for a safe driver, it shdnt matter.
  7. Boot space doesnt matter much to me. So its equal points again.
  8. Given present discounts and deals, nothing much in ex-showroom prices either. So it's Advantage A star, I feel.
  9. Difference in Ex-showroom price: Rs.10K after all discounts

Agree with space, but a/c-cooling in K-10 is a definite improvement over old Alto.

Seen this sluggishness in the Estilo-Kseries too.

@JKBKS, how did you find the driver-seating of the A-star ? That was the main irritant for me in the A-star (apart from the price) which otherwise is a nice compact.

Did not know this! Thanks for the info.

You've made a very compelling case between the two.

Is it? I don't think they have installed a different AC for the K10. The power loss with AC will not be there, but the cooling should be the same. Any way I can comment only after a TD.

I heard the AC of the old Alto is the same as in Wagon-R, hence the power lag with AC on.

@Supremebaleno:
Front seats are definitely better in A Star when compared to K10. Legroom is not bad either in front or on back. I'm 5'10" btw.

Are you sure about this? Earlier posts by Gansan regarding on-road price of Alto K10 and AStar shows a healthy difference of 30-40K!!

Price difference of 10K makes it lot more interesting .

I went to Pratham Motors today. With just cash discount of 25000/-, the difference is close to 30000 on road. between similar variants. (Lxi/Vxi).

However, they also have a exchange bonus of 25000 if you are exchanging your car on Astar.

That will bring the difference to 5000.

I am sure you can negotiate further 5-10k based on your ability.

I too doubt this. At a difference of mere 10k the A-Star is a much better buy. The prices I posted were obtained by me from ABT Maruti at lunch time yesterday.

I would not be that dismissive of Vista Terra Petrol. My brother owns it and I have driven it. Being 4 cylinder engine, it has lesser vibrations. It is super silent, quite free revving and nice to drive.

Also remember that it is a FIAT engine, not TATA home grown Petrol.

It will not set any performance charts on Fire owing it to the weight of Vista. So power to weight ratio will not be comparable to K10. But it is definitely decent car. My brother gets an average of 13-14 in City in Bangalore traffic conditions.

More over, it is leagues ahead of Alto in interior space, and rear seat comfort.

I was not told of any exchange bonus, just a loyalty bonus of 10K. I will check with them again.

But I feel if they give us an EB of 25k on the A-Star, they will make up most of it in the True value price of the old car.

Oh, a Fiat engine is a different kettle of fish altogether! I take back my words.

But the sole attraction of the k10 Alto is not space and comfort, but the attractive p/w ratio of a punchy engine in a small body!

I compared K10 Vxi with A Star Lxi if you guys didnt notice. And also the Ex-Showrom price and nor OTR price. Only the advertised discounts are taken into consideration which are:
15K - Exchange Bonus
3K- Corporate discount
18K- Cash discount
This equals 36K + another 10K worth of Accessories

Ex-showroom of K10 Vxi: 3.16 lacs
Ex-showroom of AStar Lxi: 3.61 lacs with 3rd year warranty.

Now do the math....

Quite interesting and one worth looking at. Maybe this is Maruti's way of selling the A* .

I quite liked this new Alto. Just when I thought that there's nothing they could have done further to freshen it up a bit (externally) they went and did just that. I like the Fiesta'ish headlamps and the slightly tweaked grille.

I'm curious about the engine. This one I have to TD.
