Generally all World War Graves are under the Commonwealth War Greavs Commission www.cwgc.org the one here in Ledo road was however discovered very recently. When i went in 1997 it was still more or less jungle. The Indian Army had cleaned the area for the festival then.

The scene now is quiet diffrent though as the Indian Government has walled the area and maintain it under the Defence Ministry.

As a new highway NH 153 is being made extendind the NH 38 upto Burma border beyond Nampong, some part of the original Ledo Road has been abandoned. And the old pass with the markings remain intact beside the new road.

In the last picture you can see the original road

This area is far from Manipur, but NSCN does want this part of Arunachal within the greater Nagaland.

Usually its peaceful and safe but recently there has been some tension in areas close to Assam border. One should not travel during such times.

Yes, that boy picture is my favorite too! Thats why I put it in my blog's home page (at the bottom) here: Suhana Safar

BTW: Your CBI link in some early post in this thread, was pretty amazing too! I spent nearly 4-5 hours yesterday browsing that page and the many further links from there. Amazing stuff! Really.

@HVKumar: Did you know Arunachal Pradesh has come down to just 2 Kms from your home?

And yes it really seems that Arunachals' just 2km's away. Really unbelieavable. It must be so refreshing to walk there every morning, can't be a better way to start the day.

Ther's more across the border

Just like Pangsau Pass Festival, and Dehing Patkai Festival in our side of the border, the Burmese have something as well preety close.

Quote:
Naga New Year Festival is annually celebrated for harvest time of Naga people. It is held by rotatively among three Naga towns of Leshi, Lahe and Namyun. Festivals were held in Leshi and Lahe within last 7 years because Namyun is the most difficult place to access among them. However, varieties of Naga clans participate in their graceful new year festival wherever it is celebrated. Most of clans come to festival grounds by walking several days carrying their own rations for round trip.

Thanks, will see this link too later today. Some of the WWII pics posted by you and the war graves pics are amazing and tell a moving story! I had passed thru Ledo (on way to Nampadapha WLS) a few years ago and seen the Stilwell road sign there.

On the other hand i am yet to visit Namdapha and spend a night in Deban. I have been to Miao on this route in 1996. Had visited the zoo and Buddhist temple there.

Had no money to go further or spend some more time, but Shri Gamli Padu, the current Tawang DC who was then ADC there was most helpful and offerd me a stay at the better equipped Circuit House instead of the tourist lodge there.

Great to see this thread at such an opportune time. I'm planning a bike trip to the Stilwell road and Nagaland in October. Was searching for as much info as I could find. Looking forward to visiting Arunachal again - it's my favourite destination in the whole country.

San, is there any way one can travel further along the Stilwell road by getting some special permissions / permits etc?

I believe one is not allowed beyond Pangsaung and Lake of no Return unless you get a visa from New Delhi. Hopefully it will be either visa on arrival or same day return token kind of a system here in the near future.
Assam Arunachal border is tensed these days so do make sure that ther's no trouble before you drive towards Upper Assam.

OK. I doubt we'll be able to ride much on those dirt tracks in October, but would like to go as far into Burma as possible. Thanks for the info.

What's the reason for tension at the border? I'll be starting off from Tinsukia.

PS: Just uploading the pics of my 2005 ride on Flickr. Will share soon.
