Bought Yokohama Geolander AT G015 235/70 R16 from Madhus in Mysore after running on Continental Cross Contact AT 235/70 R16 for 6yrs and 40000kms. The Jeep ran only 5000kms after covid and the tyres had become hard. I had planned a 2000kms road trip and I did not want to risk doing high speed highway runs on a hard tyre. Let me compare the two tyres.

Pros of CCC:
- Softer ride compared to OE Bridgestone Duelers
- Excellent off road grip especially in slush
- Did a 9000km trip to Ladhak without even a single puncture

Cons of CCC:
- Average wet grip on road. This improved after 5000kms
- Braking deteriorated by a good margin. Took longer to stop and the front wheels tend to lock up on panic braking
- Noisy compared to Bridgestone and Yokos
- Tyres got hard after 5yrs and 35000kms
- The tread design is a stone magnet

Pros of Yoko:
- Excellent dry/wet road grip and also braking
- SUVish feels

Cons of Yoko:
- Not as soft as CCC
- No other issues. Too soon to comment on anything else I guess

Other options considered:
- CEAT Czar AT 245/75 R16 - No stock
- Maxxis Bravo AT 771 245/75 R16 - No stock
- Yoko Geo AT G015 245/75 R16 - No stock
- JK Ranger AT - 245/75 R16 - No reviews

Apparently tyre dealers aren't stocking 245s due to poor sales. The price difference between 235 and 245 is too wide.

Importers are stocking up ATs in 17" and 18" thanks to new Thar 2020, Fortuner, Hilux and V cross!

Hey, I have recently bought a pre-owned Thar CRDe 2018. I am looking for tyre upgrades but am confused between 235/70R16 and 255/65R16.

People are suggesting 255/65R16 but I am not able to finalize as I read somewhere that bigger tyres tend to mess with bearing.

Apart from looking big, is there any huge difference between 235 and 255. Set of 4 235/70R16 will be easy on pocket.

I am considering Yokohama Geolandar G015 AT.

90% people upgrade their wheels for looks and if that's what you want you need to get the fatter set of 255s. But the downside is the steering will become heavier, turning radius will increase and more effort will be required to maneuver the vehicle at slow speeds. Apart from this like you mentioned it's not only the bearing, it's all the suspension parts that wear out faster due to heavier set of wheels.

If you are OK with the looks and you are looking to upgrade the set purely for performance gains then stick to the 235s but get the tyres from the best brands like yoko, Michelin, ko2 etc. out there don't go in for a brand like radar or something.

If I was in your place I would buy the 255 with the best possible brand in my budget simply because I like fat tyres and more importantly I have to live with them or live because of them for next 40k kms. Also suspension parts will wear out eventually so I wouldn't bother much about that and if you are not driving in a city with traffic then it's a no brainer!

Happy shopping!

re: Mahindra Thar / Roxx - The Tyre & Wheel upgrade thread

For those who own the Crde.

I had held on to my Michelins LTX AT2s for much too long, in terms of years, even though the running was very little.

I wanted to switch to Conti CrossContacts AT or Yoko Geolander G015, but I was getting either 2 or 3 of them in the local stores - they said this size has become rare, the stock size that is - 235 70 R16, so at the shop I noticed AX6 and went for them.

And Wow!

Even on my short drive back, tarmac, some wet roads - I was simply wowed. I would rate them even higher than the Michelins LTX AT2, which I have used all these years!

So how are these tyres fairing now so far? Are you still happy with them? I have to switch tyres from the Duelers as well. I noticed that the continental have both the AX6 and the AT available at almost the same price. What did you pay?

And some pictures of the rig with the tyres would be

Why did you consider the 245/75/16? A tyre calculator shows a variance of over 5%. Can the old gen Thar handle this on the front without any spacers or mods on the OEMA alloys? A 11 mm increase in GC is nice to look at for sure. And was there a reason you did not look at the Apollo Apterra AT2? They seem to generally have good reviews here. Infact i could not find a single negative remark about them.

245/75/16 is the right tyre size for Thar CRDe. Late BD sir had extensively tested the legend V521 on JK 245/75/16 HTs and highly recommended this size. Unfortunately the production variant came with 235/70/16 Bridgestone HTs. Strangely the Scorpio getaway came with 245/75/16.

I have used Continental Cross Contact AT 235/70/16 and currently using Yokohama Geolander G015 AT 235/70/16. Both are really good tires and I highly recommend them for the CRDe.

Apollo AT wasn't popular among Thar owners so I didn't even consider it.

Thats interesting. I read some posts earlier on about the 245/75/16's rubbing the fenders and what not, and having to do a torsion beam adjust for height...is this all legit?

See, but granted not on OE alloys:

Also, did the tyres come in contact with the front fender/wheel arch during axle articulation offroad? How did you sort it out?

Thanks in advance.

Attaching a pic of my Thar for reference:

It hasn't so far touched the fenders even during extreme articulations but during full turns the inner edge rubs against the angled portion of the stabiliser bar. What brake line fouling are you talking about?

So it looks like your suggestion is to move from 235/70/16 to 245/75/16.

What was the feedback from Thar owners about the Apterra AT2? In general the feedback from folks around here only seem quite positive.

This is a good read too, and very extensive with Ceat Czars and Apollo Apterras thrown in there: https://4x4afrika.com/2024/01/29/adv...-all-rounders/

Have gone into a few South African motoring forums and looked up reviews from people who are actually driving these tyres on their utes, jimnys, and jeeps out there and they seem quite positive too. Just putting this out here for forum visibility.

So it looks like your suggestion is to move from 235/70/16 to 245/75/16.
Actual tyre dimensions vary depending on brand, type, etc. My Maxxis Bighorn MT tyres in 245/75/16 were actually slightly bigger than AT tyres in the same 245/75/16 size.

Even among AT tyres, there will be slight (upto ~ 0.5 inches) variation among brands. Some brands give the exact external dimensions as well. Some don't.

Be prepared to go for negative / zero offset wheels or spacers (not recommended) and some adjustments to the torsion bar to clear the tyres upsizing.

If you want stock like on road dynamics, would suggest to stick to stock tyre size.
