Team-BHP - Hyundai i20 : Tyre & wheel upgrade thread

Changed to Yokohama Earth1 on my iGen i20 Asta today. Had driven about 46,000 kms on the stock Apollo's. Not a single puncture on the Apollo.

Will post some reviews after testing/a drive in the rain.

The stock Apollos (175/70R14) on my 2010 i20 ran out at just 24k kilometers, then switched to XM2 and upped the tyre size to 185/70R14, I have to say the ride quality and road noise had shown perceptible improvement. And now at 61k (37k on XM2) There is still rubber left for may be another 5k. After that I am planning to upsize to 15" alloys with 185/65 tyres.

On my research to find out the right upsize, I found this awesome website which shows changes in all parameters related to plus sizing ur wheels/tyres, and recommendations based on them and with graphic representations. It's got a good database of most cars' wheel/tyre sizes too. Cool! Give it a try.

I paid 4,300 each (in Goa). Free balancing and alignment was done and was charged 200 for nitrogen.

They are offering an Health Insurance plan from Iffco-Tokio as a freebie.

Since you seem to be knowing a lot about Hyundai, would you also know what the approximate cost of the projector+DRL headlamp setup from the Asta(O) cost? Both, from the showroom and aftermarket/used part market?

You are very welcome.
According to a fairly reliable source the Headlamps cost Rs.30,000 for a pair but Hyundai projector headlamps are usually more expensive so you can just call up a service center and confirm the price of I20 Active's Projector Headlamps since they are carried over to the i20.

Used part market prices actually depend on how well you can bargain, fair price would be 15k~ for a mint condition pair.

IMP:What you need to bear in mind first is that the ASTA DRL's may need different wiring as compared to lower models so check Asta's connectors and buy the headlamps only after checking if they work with the same wiring.

Bumping up an old thread.

My First Gen i20 Magna CRDI (2011) is due for a new set of shoes.

The OEM's were Apollo Aceleres rated at 175/70/R14, i then moved on to 185/65/R14 for the next set.

From what i know through the community and what Lokmanya Tires, Pune (Mr. Kulkarni) told me is that i can upgrade further to 195/60/R14 for my model of i20. The current Elite i20 has 185/65/R14 on base models and 195/55/R16 on the higher end variants.

Can some one confirm on what could be the best upgrade ? Is it still 195/60/R14 ? Thanks in advance

I was in the same predicament. from 175/70/R14 changed to 185/65/R14. 195/60/R14 is possible but 185/65 gives better grip than 175/70 (obviously), does not affect fuel economy and provides a decent balance between grip & economy IMHO.

I recently noticed a sidewall tear on one of the tires of my Elite i20 Asta, so am running on the spare tire. Am planning to get the punctured tire fixed this weekend, but am in a fix if I should patch it + put a tube in it, or simply replace the tire, since I anyway absolutely hate the Bridgestone B250s which came with the car.

Does it make sense to upgrade to 205/55 R16? (current size is 195/55 R16) What brands come in this size? Any recommendations? Based on Yokohama's website the Earth1 doesn't seem to come in this size, any other options?

Since you asked if it would make any sense to upsize, my answer would be no. It is really not required of any hatchback, specially the Elite i20 as the 195 section itself is more than enough.. anything more will be just diminishing returns and strictly only for poser value.

As for changing the brand, you could change the damaged tyre (if its beyond repair) and keep that as the spare. The other 4 you can change based on whether you want to spend roughly 12-14k factoring in exchange. No manufacturer gives good tyres as stock, an Earth-1 or XM2+ will be miles better than the Bridgestone.

Switched to Yokohama Earth-1 tires recently on my i20 (2011). The stock Apollo tires lasted for around 33k kms (4.5 years!). They started showing some serious degradation (obviously since I used them for 4.5 years) after I crossed 30k mark. So then I decided to go for the Earth-1.
So, till now I have covered around 1k kms on them and I must say that its a huge improvement over the stock Apollo tires. The car now rides and handles very well. Noise level too has gone down. All in all, very much satisfied by them :thumbs up

Thanks! Have decided to get a sidewall patch and add a tube to make the tyre a permanent spare.

Will change all 5 tyres together once the tread wears out, have done 18k kms in roughly 14 months, so should be changing these in the next 12 months as I expect to cover higher distances over the next year.

Did you get the stock size? My apollos have become very noisy of late and it is becoming very annoying. Still got decent thread left at 38k.

Yes I got the stock 185/65 R14 size. And yeah, the Apollos were very noisy, I agree on that. Good to know that your set of tyres are still going good at 38k. It was because of the bad roads and the weather here in Mumbai that my car's tires gave up at 33k kms. They also got punctured many a times.

What are the alternatives in the 195/55 R16 category for the Elite i20?

Our car has the OEM Bridgestone B250's. They are, at best, average tires.

Considering they've done close to 25K within 18 months, I will be replacing them by the time they touch 30K.

My primary concern is reduction in road noise. These days the car is being driven mostly in the city, so grip levels needn't be leech-like.

Are the Continental ContiMaxContact MC5 195/55 R16 tires any good?

I'm not keen on up-sizing and would prefer sticking to the manufacturer recommended spec only.

I have 195/60/15 MC5 in my remapped Polo TSi and they are excellent. Lots of grip, no squealing, reasonably quiet and nice ride comfort.

They are also harder than the michelins so will survive the rigors of Indian roads and potholes better.

All in all, while they are not the best in anything, they are nice all rounders.
