Re: Vintage Jaguar XK120/140/150 in India

Would love to have some details of this photo, of a red XK140 drop head coupe. Where was it taken? When? By whom? Is it known whose car this is? I take it from other messages that it is thought that this car is owned by "Doc" who I take to be Dr Ravi Prakash of Bangalore, the car regd WBB9668, once owned by C. Ravi Kumar. Can anyone confirm? We think this might be chassis 807393 but would really love to have confirmation. Regards, John Elmgreen

How wonderful to see yet another 120 being revived again. What a gorgeous machine and awesome restoration.

Along with the XK150 from my previous post there is also an XK120 visible, registered MYA 5600. John and others, is it accounted for?

Re: Vintage Jaguar XK120/140/150 in India

Great photos! Thank you so much Karlosdeville for these.
Will see if I can make contact with Hajee Sattar Sait to get more information, but it seems to me that the car he is racing, which is a 1959 XK150 Drop Head Coupe, left hand drive, is chassis 838446 which came new to India with someone who worked in the American Embassy in New Delhi. The XK120 is a roadster, right hand drive, apparently in Cream with two tone upholstery, and no vents in the front guards (they came with later cars). It therefore may be 660071 - about which we know nothing after its new sale in Bombay, or 660284, sold new in Madras and about which we have some history.
Can someone tell us where these cars would have been registered - the XK120 MVA5600 (of which I have no previous record) and the XK150 DLF778? And do these numbers indicate any dates of registration?
Also trying to contact Mel Webb, would love to know how she got those old photos of Bangalore.
Regards, John Elmgreen (Sydney, Australia)

John the 120 is registered MYA, and not MVA which is the erstwhile Mysore state, later Bangalore and now Bengaluru! The 150 is DLF 778, which is a Delhi registration.

Mel's father was Fred Webb, who ran an auto dealership for years in Bangalore. She can be contacted via the facebook link posted.

Re: Vintage Jaguar XK120/140/150 in India

Thanks again Karlosdeville.
I mentioned XK120 OTS rhd 660071 - in fact this car "surfaced" (so far as I am concerned anyway) in 2011 when someone in Northern India was starting a restoration. It is the car in the picture reproduced in our book "The Jaguar XK120 in the Southern Hemisphere" as a wreck. The same picture has now been posted to this list with pictures of the car as now restored. So that car is identified as 660071, sold new in 1950 in Bombay through Garware Motors. Whether it is also the car shown as racing no. 2 in the pictures very recently posted to this list is a matter for speculation.
The other XK120 OTS rhd 660284 has been registered in India as MHH6842 and as WBD933 and has a a lot of owners, the last known to me being Sharad Sanghi, a big collector. I posted to this list about this car back in 2011 also. There are photos of this car with an XK140 grille. Again, I cannot say whether this was the car that was raced per the recent pictures, but the history of it indicates that it may be less likely to have been the racer than 660071.

Re: Vintage Jaguar XK120/140/150 in India

Vintage Jags in India can be mysterious as its difficult to pierce their stories.
Here is a Jag 120 in south India. The person sitting in the car is a motorcycle racer, a Parsi from Mumbai. Its not his car. If anyone has the matching registration number with some history, I will send an unmolested photo.
There was a XK120 in Kolkata apparently owned by an actress, this car was acquired and raced. Sometime its engine blew, some other Jag engine was plonked in. No idea if the engine was rebuilt to XK specs. I suspect it to be the MHH car, getting more info is difficult.

Hajee Sattar Sait himself owned a XK 120, why is he in this car which is LHD? Did Jamsaheb of Nawanagar not have a car which was lying at Dadar, went to Choksi and left the country? That carried a registration DNB of doubtful origin.

Looking forward to feedback.

Cheers harit
