Khalil, thank you for this information. What sort of body does the car have? Roadster? Coupe? Drop Head Coupe? What part of India is Mt Abu in? Regards, John E

Harit: this is what I wrote in The Jaguar XK120 in the Southern Hemisphere as to what I could learn about Garware,. I would love to know more:

"Garware Motors Limited was in business at least by the 1930s, perhaps earlier, and was located then in New Queen’s Road, Bombay. The company went public in 1981 and its line of business is now in plastics, as Garware Polyester, with no motor trade links for some years. Peter Heilbron who was lent the XK120 OTS 660798 by Garware to race it in 1955, then worked for Kodak in India and recalled that founder B.D. Garware was an early pioneer in the plastics industry at that time – and a customer of Heilbron’s, as Kodak had interests in plastics through its American connections."

Harit,

This is what I knew about Sanghi to write in "The Jaguar XK120 in the Southern Hemisphere": again, all corrections and additions are very welcome. As you can see, I am aware that he has 2 x XK120s.

Quote:
"Sanghi Bros was a business started by Sohanlal Sanghi and was originally called Rajputana Motors in Jaipur and Indore. Soon it expanded to include Sanghi family dealerships all over India, and Sanghi Bros Limited is today based in Indore and owned and run by son of the founder, chairman Sharad Sanghi who is a prominent motor collector and the owner of two XK120s (660284 and 660852). It is today one of the largest dealers for Tata cars and trucks in India, and also has Fiat, Hyundai and Bajaj dealerships. Cousins have Sanghi dealerships in Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad."

Ofcourse something will always come up, it just requires posting / publishing and two way communication.

Here is a XK on the beach. But this was some sort of event because they have placed markers for a track. I have a fairly good idea who was involved, but I need to confirm after showing pictures.
See the wheel spinning, throwing up some dirt, the photo does convery some action

Cheers harit

Garware Motors Ltd., Bombay, advised Jaguar Cars in January 1955 that an XK120 had won a race and two trophies. The owner of the car was advised as Master Habib Husein but he appears to have been too young to have raced it. The photograph shows Peter Heilbron and Master Habib Husein.
Not too many updates, but I learnt that the car pictured (BMU 2944) is still with Mr. Nazeer Hussain (maybe Habib was his father) in Mumbai cream colour, and being slowly restored. Mr. Hussein has been well associated with the motorsport scene in India over the years.

Another set-up which raced these cars was Kalinga. Has anyone ever heard of them?

Cheers harit

No, I have never heard of a Jaguar racing team called Kalinga. Can you tell us more? Does anyone know what were the names of the sports car clubs in India in the 1950s?

Who took the photograph and when and where was it taken?

Yes, this car also passed through the hands of the late C. Ravikumar in Bangalore. I remember it very well; at that stage (1987) I was buying an MG TC from Ravi and this car was there in his garage, complete, and painted black. I wished I could have afforded it, but it was well out of my reach. Then, the car was shipped to Indore to Manvendra Singh, probably in the early nineties.

Re: Vintage Jaguar XK120/140/150 in India

Another update from the red 120 we see in the movie 'Waqt' (1965), with the chrome spare wheel cover on the boot.

In the movie 'Chandan ka Palna' (1967), it appears to be the same car (very likely, but cannot guarantee). For a split second the registration number is visible too, reading BMC 8479. Now do keep in mind often the plates are changed in movie shoots.
