This is a BROCKHOUSE CORGI Scooter with 98cc Excelsior engine commonly known as PARACHUTE bike in india as they were used by paratroopers, they used to jump from the aircraft with these bikes hanging on their backs(weighs hardly 25-30 kg) to use them under difficult conditions where the roads were not motorable for 4 wheelers. These bikes did not have kick starters and gears they were pushed to start. Manufactured between 1947 - 1955 exclusively for the defence services in Southport, Merseyside, England.
Hope this information helps.

Yes this is a Brockhouse Corgi/Indian Papoose. But it is only one edition of the Paratroopers Motorcycle, not the only one. Most of the Paratroopers Motorcycle in India were the original Paratroopers Motorcycle, the Excelsior Welbike driven by a Viliers Sprite 98cc engine. The Brockhouse Corgi was based on the Welbike and the Indian Papoose was the americanised version of the Corgi. There have been a few other iterations also around the world, over the years.

Also the Paratroopers Motorcycle was never carried on the back of the paratrooper. It was separately dropped with its independent parachute and packed inside a metal canister (cylinder) - and the paratrooper had to go looking and retrieve it from it's landing spot, often quite far from his own landing spot. Like the Paratroopers Motorcycle there was also a folding bicycle called the Para Bike, made by BSA and this was sometimes carried on the paratrooper's person, released just before touchdown so that the paratrooper could safely rollover after landing if needed. However the Para Bikes would also be para dropped in crates (holding a few of them in each) as it was less risky for the paratrooper.

Lovely pics. There was an article on TOI today regarding the rally. It seems good amount of vehicles turned out. IMO an event/rally should be organised as a part of 200 year celebration of Hazratgunj which would gel with the overall transformed look of the market. Hope something of this sort happens soon.

Nice event, sadly Lucknow lost its grand cars. But we see a movement to bring cars back to Lucknow. Keep it up.
Two points. That red Merc is either a 170V with a 4 cylinder engine. If it has 6 cylinders as stated, then it is not a 170 V.
That Morris woody is an ad-on, sometime back this car was apparently offered as a 1914 model!

Cheers harit

Re: Vintage Car Rally at Lucknow

Thanks for the suggestions dear. We have already moved the proposal around 3 months back, but since the renovation is taking time, we are keeping our fingers crossed for that.
