10 observations on my Skoda Slavia 1.0 MT after 10 months of ownership

The steering is very light but the heft of the car and the reasonable feel more than make up to give very good straight line stability.

It has been 10 months with my Carbon Steel Active 1.0 MT. The odo now reads 12500km. A few observations:

• The car had its first impact with a stray dog which jumped unsighted from a median. Damage to bumper fender and suspension. All done under insurance. It took a while to get the car aligned right but Skoda helped with technical guidance and the dealer got it back to as good as new.
• The suspension seems to have become even more absorbent as time has passed. None of the hardening noticed in some Japanese and Korean models.
• No noticeable squeaks or rattles.
• The wheels go out of balance the minute the tires have pebbles lodged in the threads. The imbalance however last only in a small speed range.
• I have had the opportunity to do back to back drives with an a6,5 series and a superb. I am not saying this because I bought the car but honestly the Slavia does not give anything up in a ride/handling comparison. In fact it is more stable on uneven surfaces at higher speeds thanks to the greater pliancy. The friends who own these cars too were honest in their praise for the Slavia in terms of value for money. The steering is very light but the heft of the car and the reasonable feel more than make up to give very good straight line stability. It is a bit sad watching the much loved SUVs of the mass market jump and jiggle around on roads the Slavia dispatches with disdain.
• The engine is a let down at lower speeds but more than makes up at the higher end.
• I have never got below 13.5 kmpl on any tank. The 95 octane makes no difference whatsoever. I found Shell regular to be the best.
• There has been the odd spurious service the car message but this goes away on the next start.
• I have the manual AC and have not faced any of the issues reported here and elsewhere even in peak summer.
• Overall the car is a gem. The comfort when doing long back breaking drives is something that needs to be experienced to believe. The seats are soft yet supportive. I will never ruin them with any seat cover etc. My advice is to put the service doubts in the far back end of your mind and buy the car.
