Apple announces iPhone-based Digital Key for BMW

BMW will be the first carmaker to get Apple's iPhone-based digital car key.

The BMW Digital Key for the iPhone will enable users to just tap to unlock the vehicle. Users can then place the iPhone in the smartphone tray and push the engine start / stop button to start the car.

Owners can get their Digital Key set up through the BMW Smartphone App. The key can be shared with up to five people via iMessage. The key can also be programmed to restrict the car's top speed, horsepower and maximum radio volume. These options can be accessed from inside the car or through Apple Wallet.

The Digital Key is stored in the Secure Element of the iPhone and can be accessed through Apple Wallet. The key will function for up to 5 hours even if the iPhone turns off due to low battery. The Digital Key is also compatible with the Apple Watch.

The BMW Digital Key for iPhone will be available in 45 countries on models manufactured after July 1, 2020. It will be available with the 1 Series, 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, 8 Series, X5, X6, X7 X5M, X6M and Z4.

The BMW Digital Key is compatible with the iPhone XR, iPhone XS or newer models and Apple Watch Series 5 or newer.
