Audi evaluating local assembly of EVs in India

Audi currently offers the e-tron electric SUV and e-tron GT in India. Both models are imported as CBUs.

Thanks to the strong demand for its electric cars, Audi is now evaluating the feasibility of assembling EVs in India.

Audi currently offers the e-tron electric SUV and e-tron GT in India. Demand for both models has been strong and the first batch of cars has already been sold out. The second lot has also been sold out till January 2022. The company is now seeking a higher allocation of EVs from its HQ to cater to the rising demand.

At present, Audi imports the e-tron and e-tron GT via the CBU route. This attracts high import duties. Local assembly would help bring the price down. However, Audi believes that it would not be possible without the support of the government in the form of tax sops for a period of 3-5 years.

Audi is also looking at other EV models that could be introduced in the Indian market. The cars currently available in India are all priced upwards of Rs. 1 crore.
