Details of Mahindra's US Postal delivery van revealed

In 2016, Mahindra was shortlisted to develop the next-gen delivery vehicle for the US Postal Service (USPS). Now, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) document has revealed some details of Mahindra's prototype US postal delivery truck.

The NHTSA document lists out the various configurations of delivery truck. The vehicle has a wheelbase of 3,200 mm which is identical to the Genio pickup truck. It will use a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine sourced from General Motors which will have mild-hybrid versions as well. Mahindra will build a total of 14 prototypes in 2WD and 4WD configurations. The document also indicates that the USPS delivery vehicle will be offered with safety equipment like manual Type 2 seat belts and driver side frontal airbag.

As part of the US $11 million (Rs. 71 crore) prototype contract, Mahindra was supposed to deliver 8 prototypes by September while the remaining units are likely to be delivered by November 2017. If approved, Mahindra will have to build 1.8 lakh delivery vehicles in the next 6 years. Each of these is expected to cost around US $35,000 (Rs. 22.8 lakh).
