Govt. imposes restrictions on tyre imports

In order to promote local manufacturing, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has put restrictions on the imports of certain new pneumatic tyres used in motor cars, buses, lorries, motorcycles, scooters and bicycles.

An importer would now require a licence or permission from the DGFT for goods under the restricted category to import tyres. Earlier, the import of these tyres was allowed without any restrictions.

It is said that the move aims to curb the import bill for non-essential goods. It is also seen as a response to a demand made by the domestic tyre manufacturers.
