Govt. to states, police - electronic licence, RC valid

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has notified all state transport departments to accept documents like driving licence, registration certificate (RC) and insurance papers in electronic format.

The advisory states that documents presented through applications like DigiLocker and mParivahan are legally recognised at par with original documents as per the provisions of the IT Act, 2000. Such documents are also deemed valid under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Similarly, a hard copy of the insurance documents is not required if the same has been updated in the mPharivan app.

A few months back, the government had submitted a proposal to make digital versions of all vehicle documents valid alternatives to hard copies. It was later passed but the ministry had received several complaints about state authorities failing to accept electronic documents as valid.
