Jaguar Land Rover cancels plan to build EVs in India

JLR was unable to find the right price-quality balance for locally sourced EV parts.

Jaguar Land Rover has reportedly canceled its plans to manufacture EVs at Tata Motors’ plant in southern India.

According to media reports, JLR was unable to find the right price-quality balance for locally sourced EV parts. Talks with local suppliers have also been halted. Work on the project has been suspended for about 2 months as global demand for electric cars slows down.

JLR’s decision to shelve plans to manufacture its EVs in India is also expected to affect Tata Motors. As per the report, the launch of Tata’s premium EVs under the Avinya brand could be delayed as they share platforms and components with other JLR-branded EVs.

Tata is setting up a new manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu. The new plant is nearing completion and is expected to begin operations in September. It will have a capacity of 2,50,000 units per annum once it reaches full capacity in 5-7 years.
