Lewis Hamilton wins the 2019 Monaco GP

Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton has won the 2019 Monaco grand prix. Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel finished in second place, while Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) came in third place.

Hamilton started from pole position ahead of his team mate, while Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and Sebastian Vettel lined up on the second row of the grid. Vettel's team mate Charles Leclerc started back in 16th place. Eager to make up places at the start, Leclerc hit the barriers, resulting in a puncture. The safety car was deployed as tyre debris from Leclerc’s Ferrari was strewn all over the race track. He later retired from the race.

To take advantage of the safety car, the leaders came into the pits for a tyre change. Verstappen collided with Bottas' Mercedes while trying to rejoin after his pit stop. The stewards deemed it as an "unsafe release" and therefore the Dutchman was handed over a 5 second penalty. This dropped him down to 4th place.

Pierre Gasly in the other Red Bull finished in fifth place ahead of McLaren's Carlos Sainz. Torro Rosso drivers Daniil Kvyat and Alexander Albon finished in 7th and 8th place respectively. Daniel Ricciardo (Renault) came in ninth place ahead of Romain Grosjean in the Haas.

Lewis Hamilton leads the Driver's Championship from his team mate. Pierre Gasly recorded the fastest lap of the race. The next race will be held in Canada on June 9, 2019.
