A Mahindra Classic joins my Major: Quick review of the jeep

That short wheelbase silhouette, vintage styling, soft-top charm, and sheer presence on the road had always fascinated me.

BHPian LJP recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

It feels great to be back here sharing yet another milestone in my Jeep journey. Some of you might remember my earlier thread about my Mahindra Major CL500 – a solid performer with the rugged MDI engine and loads of character. I’ve included the link to that thread here for anyone who’s interested in reading more about it. (https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/4x4-v...l-500-mdi.html)

At the time, I genuinely believed that my Jeep dreams were complete. The Major gave me everything I had hoped for- reliability, performance, and that classic Jeep appeal. I told myself there was no need to spend any more money or add another one to the garage.

But deep down, there was always a soft spot for the Mahindra Classic CL340. That short wheelbase silhouette, vintage styling, soft-top charm, and sheer presence on the road had always fascinated me. I used to dream about owning one, but they’re incredibly rare, especially in good, untouched condition. Most of the ones I came across either had been heavily modified or were in rough shape.

Then, recently, while casually browsing through the classifieds online, I stumbled upon a listing that made me pause. A Mahindra Classic that looked almost too good to be true. It had the original factory parts, immaculate interiors, stock seats still in place, and not a single spot of rust anywhere. Even the soft top looked well cared for. The ad claimed it had minimal use, and judging by the pictures, it seemed like a time capsule. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

Since I’m currently abroad, I asked my brother to visit Palakkad and take a look in person. He called me soon after reaching there and confirmed it, the Jeep was in excellent condition and very much worth considering. The only thing that made me hesitate was the price. It was on the higher side, and I initially said no, trying to stay practical and not give in to impulse. But over the next couple of days, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Jeeps like this don’t come around very often, and certainly not in this kind of shape. So I decided to go for it. The deal was done.

My brother drove the Jeep all the way from Palakkad to our hometown in Kannur. I was half-expecting a call reporting some minor issue on the way, but to my surprise, the drive was flawless. The Jeep performed beautifully, smooth and trouble-free throughout. And now, it’s sitting in my garage as a prized possession. Honestly, I don’t know what I’m going to do with the Major anymore, it’s still an excellent machine, but the Classic has completely taken over my heart with its looks, simplicity, and old-school charm.

As for its current condition, I couldn’t have asked for better. The drivetrain, body, interiors, wiring, and soft top, everything is in top-notch shape. Whoever owned this before me really knew how to take care of a vehicle. There's literally nothing that needs attention mechanically or cosmetically, except for one thing, the tyres. Believe it or not, the tyres on this Jeep are from 2005. Yes, they’re two decades old! While they still appear decent, I know they’re long overdue for a change. Safety always comes first.

I’ve started exploring tyre options and I’m currently leaning towards the stock size – 215/75 R15. However, I’ve also heard that upsizing to 235s gives the Jeep a broader, more planted stance, which is quite tempting. I’m seriously considering the Apollo Apterra AT2, but I’m also curious about Mud Terrain (MT) options since I do plan to take it on light trails occasionally. I did check with Madhu’s in Bangalore, but they currently don’t have BFGoodrich or Cooper STTs in stock. They do have Yokohama Geolandar A/Ts, which seem like a decent alternative, but I’d love to hear what fellow BHPians have to say about tyre options, both in terms of looks and drivability.

One area where I would really appreciate input is regarding the engine. While my Major runs the reliable MDI, the Classic comes with the Peugeot diesel engine, and I’ve heard mixed opinions about it. Some say it’s not as bulletproof as the MDI, and I’d love to know more from those who’ve owned or worked with these engines. What are the typical maintenance concerns with the Peugeot engine? Are there any specific issues to look out for, or preventive care tips to keep it running well for years? I’d love to get a better understanding of how to maintain it properly and make sure I’m doing everything I can to preserve this piece of Jeep history.

I also welcome any general suggestions or guidance from fellow Classic owners. What are some mods you’d recommend, if any? Are there things best left untouched to retain its originality and charm? And if anyone has tips for sourcing rare parts or maintaining authenticity, I’d love to hear them. Whether you’re into restoration or light customization, I’m open to ideas.
It’s a surreal feeling to finally own a Classic. It’s one of those dream vehicles I thought I might never come across in the right condition. But here it is, sitting proudly in my garage, and I can’t wait to share more updates and pictures once I get the tyres sorted and give it a proper photoshoot.

Looking forward to hearing from you all and connecting with more Jeep enthusiasts – especially those who share a soft spot for the timeless Mahindra Classic.
