Maruti developing Baleno-based crossover (codenamed: YTB)

The YTB could be shaped like a coupe or a mini crossover.

According to a media report, Maruti Suzuki is working on a new compact crossover (codenamed: YTB) that would be based on the Baleno hatchback.

The report states that the new model is being referred to as the 'sister car' of the Baleno. While exact details are scarce, it has been reported that the car could be shaped like a coupe or a mini crossover.

Using an existing platform for the new model would enable Maruti to save on development costs. It will also reduce the time required to develop the new model.

At present, the Vitara Brezza is Maruti's sole model in the sub-4 meter SUV segment and is facing tough competition from the likes of the Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonet. The news of the Baleno-based YTB comes at a time when Maruti needs new models to keep increasing its market share in the SUV segment.

Maruti Suzuki is also developing a mid-size SUV to compete with the Hyundai Creta.
