Next-gen XUV500 & Scorpio may coexist with current-gen models

Mahindra is said to be redefining its future SUV strategy as it works towards regaining its market share in the SUV segment. To achieve this, Mahindra has lined up new products including the next generation XUV500 and Scorpio.

Reports suggest that the new models could be sold alongside the current generation XUV500 and Scorpio due to their sustained popularity.

Test mules have revealed that the next generation XUV500 will get flush-fitting door handles - a feature that has never been seen in this segment before. The SUV will be based on a monocoque chassis. It could be offered with a 2.0-litre mStallion T-GDi turbocharged, four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 187 BHP @ 5,000 rpm and 380 Nm at 1,750-4,000 rpm as well as a 2.0-litre diesel unit.

The new Scorpio is expected to be based on a ladder frame chassis. It could be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine with an output of 158 BHP.

In FY2012, Mahindra's market share in the SUV segment was 55%, which dropped to 19% by FY2020. Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director (Auto & Farm Sectors) has stated that the carmaker plans to focus on SUVs instead of crossovers and will not target segments where it does not have a competitive advantage.
