One in every seven cars sold globally is an EV

The Tesla Model Y is the best-selling EV in the world, followed by the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Song.

According to media reports, BYD dominated global EV sales in Q1 2023. The Chinese EV carmaker secured the highest market share of 21.1%, while Tesla came in second, occupying a 16% market share.

Reports also state that 1 in every 7 cars sold globally in the first quarter of 2023 was an electric vehicle. Global passenger EV sales in Q1 2023 increased by 32%. BEVs accounted for 73% of the total EV sales, with plug-in hybrids making up the rest.

Global EV sales are expected to reach 14.5 million units by the end of 2023. China continues to be the market leader, while the USA surpassed Germany to become the second-largest EV market. Reports suggest 56% of the total global EV sales come from China.
