Replacing Swift with a used diesel car: Considering Honda Amaze & WR-V

I know both these cars can't match the Swift in handling but I've reached an age where mind wins over heart.

BHPian emkay.india recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Hi all,

I have a 2008 Swift Petrol 1.3 that has done 95k so far and has been performing exceedingly well. The registration ends by Aug this year.I'm thinking to replace it with a used diesel car or CSUV and have shortlisted Amaze and WR-V. Now, I don't need to explain the performance of the Swift 1.3 and it's agility. I know both these cars can't match the Swift in handling but I've reached an age where mind wins over heart but at times it's the other way around too when driving in ghats.

My requirements are as below:

  • Need to have good driveability at city speeds. I'm tired of shifting gears in my Swift P.
  • Relaxed cruising at 110-120 kmph.
  • Mileage of 18 in mixed conditions
  • Needs to support occasional spirited driving (after all I'm coming from a Swift 1.3 P) but can compromise here to an extent.
  • Needs to be <4 meters.
  • Not interested in AMT or Ford (due to their departure).

I'm looking at Spinny or Cars24 to get either of these cars. I found an Amaze diesel cvt and a WR-V both at around the same price. How's the performance of Amaze diesel cvt compared to manual? Need your suggestion to choose between these two considering the above.

By the way, is it a good decision to move to a diesel now considering the ideas of govt to ban diesels in cities with a million population by 2027?

Thanks.

Here's what GTO had to say on the matter:

Your current car has done 95000 km in 13 years. That's barely 7300 km a year. While your running doesn't necessitate a diesel, purely because of the smooth CVT, go for the Amaze Diesel CVT. It's a wonderful city car and very fuel-efficient too.

You should also consider the Jazz CVT.

Remember to get the CVT oil changed in a timely manner. Many owners miss this, then complain about CVT failures.

If at all the ban comes, it will be for *new* diesels. Existing ones can still continue driving. That being said, I do expect more & more big cities to impose bans on 10-year old diesel cars, like Delhi. Mumbai & Bangalore are definitely next, not sure about Chennai.

Here's what BHPian vigsom had to say on the matter:

I first interpreted point#1 wrong. If I assume correct, you're okay with a manual as long as you don't need to keep shifting gears.

  • Option 1 - Liva diesel or a Jazz diesel will be your best bets. Jazz diesel has the sixth cog to help you with the highway cruise and fuel efficiency.
  • Option 2 - Gen3 (2012- 2013) Honda City petrol (kms no bar as long as the car's been kept well). It may not be an under 4m car but trust me, it doesn't require gear shifts in the city. Light clutch, plus one can easily manage bumper to bumper drives in gears 2 and 3. Please drive one and you'll see how effortless it is. Only issue here is you may not get the FE of 18kmpl that is one of your requirements, but the lower capital investment will make up for that.
  • Option3 - Tata Nexon diesel or Altroz diesel.

I doubt if Chennai will ever see a diesel ban, coz the state is full of diesel fans.

Here's what BHPian Shreyans_Jain had to say on the matter:

Jazz/WRV over Amaze, any day. Superior quality inside out, better suspension, better seats and and that additional 6th gear which is much needed on highways. Will strongly suggest that you consider Nexon and Sonet diesels as well, they are superior cars overall and are not discontinued models.

Here's what BHPian SoumenD had to say  on the matter:

It’s pretty straightforward IMO. If you need an automatic, the Amaze is your go-to car. If you are fine with Manual, WR-V it is.
