Rumour: All 2-wheelers upto 150cc to be electric after 2025

According to a media report, the government could mandate the sale of electric 2-wheelers in India after 2025 by banning sales of conventional motorcycles upto 150cc.

The report suggests that all new 2-wheelers in the sub-150cc segment would have to be powered by electricity from April 2025. Petrol powered 2-wheelers that are registered before the cut-off date will be allowed to ply. Further, 2-wheelers with engine capacities larger than 150cc will not be affected by this move.

According to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), more than 2 crore 2-wheelers were sold between 2018-19. By reducing the number of petrol-powered 2-wheelers on Indian roads, the government is hoping to reduce vehicular pollution.
