Rumour: Maruti Suzuki building prototype of YJC 7-seater MPV

Last year, there were reports that Maruti Suzuki was working on a new compact 7-seater MPV. This vehicle will be positioned under the Ertiga in the company's line-up and is expected to be pitted against the Datsun Go+. Now comes the news that the company is building a prototype of the new model.

The MPV has been codenamed YJC. In 2013, Suzuki had revealed a stretched version of the WagonR with seven seats. While this vehicle was longer than the standard WagonR, it was still less than 4 metres in length. It is likely that the YJC is based on this vehicle. It is likely to share many parts with the WagonR, which will allow the company to keep its price low.

There are rumours that the YJC could also be a stretched version of the Celerio hatchback.

The YJC is likely to be powered by either a 1.0-litre or a 1.2-litre petrol engine. An automated manual transmission might also be offered.

The YJC is expected to be launched in 2016. It will be sold in the local market and South East Asia.

More details on the YJC are awaited.
