Rumour: Mercedes to simplify its variant portfolio in US

According to a media report, Mercedes-Benz is looking to reduce the number of variants on sale in the USA. The company could discontinue some variants, trims and engine options.

It is reported that the German carmaker has disclosed this information to its dealers at a meeting in Las Vegas. Official announcements to this effect are expected in the next 3 months. Mercedes will eliminate low volume add-ons and packages while it could also offer popular options as standard equipment, or add them to existing packages.

In 2000, Mercedes-Benz had 15 models. Today, the company sells 90 models and variants in the USA. Higher number of models and variants increases costs like logistics, training and manufacturing along with increasing parts inventory and requires additional marketing support.
