Rumour: Renault India to stop diesel car sales from 2020

According to a media report, Renault is likely to stop selling diesel cars in India from April 2020, when BS-VI emission norms come into force.

The current crop of diesel engines will have to be updated to meet BS-VI norms. This would require substantial investments. However, diesel car sales have been on a decline in recent times. According to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the share of diesel cars in the Indian market dropped to 19% at the end of FY2019. Therefore, investing in BS-VI diesel engines may not be the right approach at a time when the government is pushing for electric mobility.

Reports suggest that Electric vehicles (EVs) are part of Renault's mid-term plan for 2022. The company is looking into manufacturing EVs in India and is open to the idea of forging partnerships with local players.
