Rumour: Tata's upcoming premium SUVs to use Fiat engines

In August 2014, we had reported that Tata Motors was developing two new SUVs with inputs from its British subsidiary, Jaguar Land Rover. Now, media reports suggest that the two SUVs, codenamed Q501 and Q502 are likely to be powered by engines co-developed with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA).

A report by Business Standard claims that Tata Motors is working on the local development of FCA's 2.0-litre MultiJet diesel engine. This engine, which will be manufactured at the Tata-Fiat Ranjangaon factory, will be used in the Q501, Q502 and a new global compact SUV, codenamed 554, that FCA will sell under the Jeep brand.

The Q501 is a 5-seater while the Q502 is a 7-seater. Both SUVs along with the Jeep SUV are expected to be introduced in India in 2017. The two Tata vehicles will also be sold in global markets such as South Africa, West Asia and Indonesia.
