The Zest is built on a reworked version of Tata’s X1 platform, which underpins the Vista and Manza. At the front there is the company's new signature grille, projector headlamps and a new bumper. At the rear the Zest gets a small boot and forward-pointing wraparound tail lamps. All variants ride on 15-inch alloy wheels.

On the inside, there is a new black and beige dashboard with silver accents and sparkling black inserts. Equipment includes a new instrument cluster with a multi-information display, multi-function steering wheel, Harman-developed audio system with a 5-inch multimedia screen with Bluetooth, USB and Aux-in connectivity, voice commands, smartphone integration, climate control, LED day-time running lights and guide lights. The Zest gets driver aids and safety features like electric power assisted steering with speed sensitivity and active return function, parking sensors, ABS and two airbags.

The Zest comes with a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine from Tata Motors' Revotron engine family that develops 89 bhp @ 5000 rpm and peak torque of 140 Nm @ 1750-3500 rpm. Mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, this engine features three drive modes - City (default), Eco and Sport.

Alternately the car can be bought with a 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder, Quadrajet diesel unit with that puts out 89 bhp @ 4000 rpm and peak torque of 200 Nm @ 1750-3500 rpm. The base variant gets the same engine, but with a lower power and torque output - 74 bhp and 190 Nm. The mid variant (XMA) is available with a 5-speed F-Tronic automated manual transmission (AMT), while the other variants get a 5-speed manual gearbox.
