Tata's 1.5L turbo-petrol engine development back on track

The new 1.5L turbo-petrol engine will power a new SUV that is touted to take on the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.

According to a media report, Tata Motors' 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine project has been revived following strong quarterly sales.

Shailesh Chandra, President, Passenger Vehicles Business, Tata Motors, stated that in FY2020, the carmaker sold around 11,000 units per month. This has risen to 30,000 units per month. Typically, the company spends 5-8% of its turnover on product development every year. Thanks to higher revenues, this figure is likely to increase.

The report suggests that a portion of the annual spending will be allocated for the development of the new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine. It's essentially a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol block with a fourth cylinder added to it.

The new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine is expected to be power a number of Tata products in the near future. These include the Harrier and Safari. It will also power a new SUV that is touted to take on the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
